Could anyone tell me what progress was made to photography in the 1960's, and some famous photographers and their styles?

This sounds like an essay title.

You can't really expect anything else can you?

Basically you wanted people to tell you how to do your essay rather than going out and doing the research yourself.

Maybe that's how you should've phrased your question, then. It came over as a request for us to do your work for you, not as a request for identifying resources.

I would echo the suggestion to "get to the library". I find the internet a poor resource for photographic research, the image quality is poor and reasoned critique is almost totally absent.

Here's a few places to start:

The Photography Book, Ian Jeffrey (basically an A-Z of photographers)

People in "Vogue": A Century of Portrait Photography, Robin Derrick (for fashion and portraiture)

There are a couple of books called "The History of Photography" or variations on that. I can't remember which of them I liked the best. If I get a moment I'll check my notes.

new fangled autofocus lenses,

AF was introduced in the late 70s - until the mid 80s few cameras had it.
