To ensure that the FAQ thread doesn't get bogged down with comments that aren't appropriate, I've locked it off. Please post any suggestions for changes in this thread, then we can update the other - thanks.

OK, that's a draft version of this local Canon-room FAQ - please post any comments/suggested changes in this thread and we'll see if we can knock up something worthwhile.

An excellent idea Nick. I suggest that you add the old 75-300 IS in there as some people might pick one up cheap and need to know where it fits in this scheme. Also, I guess, the 100-400 IS lens should appear in there since that's also a popular choice though personally I would rate the quality as nowhere near the 70-200/f2.8L but it gives some extra reach if somebody really wants it.

Updated with those two lenses included - any other comments are more than welcome, I don't claim that this is an authoritative opinion!

Loads of useful info there Nick....but what if you need 300mm and f/2.8? Sigma 120-300 would do the job and is far cheaper that a Canon 300mm f/2.8 prime lens.

Indeed.
I've started out based on the most frequently asked-about lenses - and of course it's difficult to know where to draw the line. I'll add it in later - see if there are any more additions first.
Thanks, Andrew.

Why thank you, David.
But if anyone disagrees with anything I've written, please say so - it'll be more useful as a consensus view. I've tried to distil out the views I've read on here as well as my own, but if I've got it wrong we need to change it.

Should we have a sub-note about the spelling of lens and lenses?

Would there be any value in adding the manufacturers selling price? It might help people exclude any options which fall way outside their price bracket. I do appreciate that lenses are often on sale for a lower figure, but it would at least give a start point.

Next we'd be adding the best price in the shops and the best price on the net and having to keep it up-to-date.
Mind you, it would save all those "Where's the best/cheapest place to buy xyz"...

How about a line something along the lines of consulting the latest editions of AP or WDC for prices?

TBH, it's good to keep pricing out of this as prices constantly fluctuate, even the RRP, meaning that we'd have to keep updating this post. It's a technical assessment for those who might be interested in buying - those buyers can then do their homework and sort out the prices when they need to.

If I could add my twopence worth - why not include sample photographs?
It would be extremely useful to see some real world shots from these lenses - no resolution charts or studio still-lifes. A few images would do, taken on both full-frame and APS-C bodies. A good layout would be to have say the orignal at 600px wide with three 200px wide 100% crops underneath (centre, bottom left, top right) .....?

I disagree, if you want a review, pick up the AP.
