Outlook 2003 Configuration Files
      #702119 - 05/09/2008 10:15

Does anyone know where to find the configuration files for Outlook 2003?

I have outlook installed on my laptop, and for some reason, 'personal folders' now appear six times (in addition to the normal personal folders root).

Two of these work, and are simply copies of the root, but clicking on the others results in an error message saying that the relevant message file cannot be found.

I cannot find any way to delete these folders using the normal menus in outlook. Added to which, Outlook is running like a three legged Camel! I don't have this problem on my desktop.

I had considered uninstalling and then re-installing Outlook, but there is no option to import and export mail accounts in 2003, so I would have to find my passwords, and set up the accounts again.

I have run the Detect and Repair option, but apart from deleting all of my 'rules' this did nothing useful.

Has anyone else suffered this problem, or does anyone have any suggestions?

Outlook (but not Outlook Express) uses files with a .pst extension for storing messages, contacts, calendar etc. These don't contain configuration information which is in the Registry.

In the folder list on the LHS of Outlook you should be able to right click and choose the Close option from the menu. By default Outlook puts these files several folders deep in the Application Data area of your user files. You can find out where by right clicking on the folder and choosing Properties from the menu and then clicking the Advanced button.

I usually put my .pst file in My Documents so that I can back it up using SyncToy (see previous post...)

Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to work, (as the option to close the unwanted personal files is greyed out).

Also, if I click on one the the 'personal files' that doesn't work, I get an error message telling me that the file cannot be found.

It seems as if Outlook has entries for files that do not exist, and have never existed.

I know where the *.pst files are, and these are all present and correct. I can also add and remove other *.pst files if I want to, but not the duplicate 'personal folders'.

Its looking as if I will need to uninstall it all and then install again. Oh well, rain is forecast for tomorrow.

You might find it worth doing a search on http://www.slipstick.com/ as this is an invaluable reference for Outlook related issues.

The config file appears to be the Office Config File, which is in
C:\Program Files/Microsoft Office/Office 11/OPW11USR.INI

Thanks Roy

I have found the file; I just need to find the registry entries concerned.

Methinks I will back it up first!

An option to SyncToy could be an Outlook add on that I use on Outlook 2003 Pst Backup

Always used this in the past but I can't get it to work since using Outlook 2003 under Vista.

I move the Outlook.pst file to the D drive (in a folder called Outlook) with all my other data files. All my data files are backed up (at least) daily as part of a standard backup routine. Keeping data files in the same partition as program files always seems a bit odd to me.

I used to use the Outlook backup program to automatically backup the PST file to my NAS drives every time Outlook closed. Since using Outlook 2003 under Vista the tool doesn't work. I use SyncToy to backup all my internal data drive to the NAS drives but it always fails to copy the PST file as it's in use, even after I shut Outlook. The only way I can backup the PST is to remember to use SyncToy before starting Outlook.

We had the repeat folder issue in Outlook2003 under XP a few weeks back - only affected one account in 5 on the PC. The only way "out" of it I found was to create a new account with a different user name and copy the contacts list from another "non-corrupted" account on the PC. I did think I had initially sorted the problem but after downloading some messages, it re-occurred same as before - a second set of personal folders then a third etc.
Creating a new account with the same settings in outlook as the corrupted one worked, but I was unable to save/export the e-mails in the damaged account as the PC just "hung" every time I went through the "export to file" step.
Most frustrating, I can tell you; curse Bill Gates and his sloppy coders

Not sure if you have resolved this but to remove the personal folders:

Either
1) Right-hand click the "personal folder" and select close folder
or
2) Go to File > Data File Management > select the persistent personal folders and click Remove.
