New lens required
      #682697 - 24/07/2008 21:59

Greetings everyone,

Hopefully someone here could help shed some light and give some recommendations on a new lens for my Nikon D80.
Currently I own a Tamron 55-200mm, and a Sigma 18-50mm.

Now i'm going away on holiday to the hustle and bustle of Disney at the end of the August, and am wanting a new lens to take with me. I regularly find for general out and about snapping the Sigma doesn't quite give me enough zoom, whereas the Tamron doesn't quite offer me enough of a wide angle. Rather than keep swapping between the 2 depending on the situation, I'm thinking of trying to get a lens that fits into the mid range of the 2. Means less kit to carry to !

Budget wise i'm looking ideally at under the 100 mark.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Jason

Have a look at the ads in AP. There are some 2nd hand lenses that would fit the budget and requirements.

Maybe the Nikon 18-70mm is what you need. Should be available 2nd hand for the price you're after.

Or maybe you're after something like the 18-200mm (available from various manufacturers) although this may be out of your price bracket.

For under 100, you are going to struggle unless you buy second-hand. Even then, I suspect that your options are going to be severely restricted. The Nikon 18-70 should be availabe used for under 100 (GBP) although you may have to shop round a fair bit for it, but even so, just cropping shops form your 18-50 would probably give you almost-as-good results. Maybe Nikon's 18-135 wold be better, but finding a used one, even for your budget, could prove very difficult.

Thanks for all the responses, i'll have another look at see if I can stretch a bit further. I'd rather pay a bit more for something i'll get more use and better results than pinch the pennies and end up with a limited option.

I'll look into the 18-135 as it sounds like it might fit the bill quite nicely.
