Does my sensor need cleaning?
      #680947 - 20/07/2008 16:04

Im just wondering what to do to fix this:

My shots all have a single dot in the picture (like blurred dirt) its tiny-ish but really annoying. Its in the centre of the frame so everything I shoot has it... but heres the thing, when I shoot a faster aperature its not there, any time its a longer exposure on anything above f2.8 its there?

So fast shutters dont show it? Is this a sensor thing or a mirror thing? I tried two lenses but they are the same.

The camera is a nikon d2x for reference. If it does need fixed where (if anywhere) can I have it done in Belfast?

thanks!

Chris

It sounds very much like dust on the sensor, which does tend to become more visible at smaller apertures.

Before you fork out for a professional cleaning job, you might want to consider getting a blower (the Giottos Rocket seems popular, less than a tenner) and having a go yourself. Don't try blowing with your mouth, you might get spit on the sensor and make things worse!

A rocket blower has coped with the vast majority of dust spots in my camera.Make sure you have a fully charged battery, follow your manuals mirror-up procedure and have the camera pointing down to aid the removal of the dust.
Well worth attempting before spending any serious money on professional cleaning. There are several excellent cleaning kits which would enable you to clean the sensor yourself,it's really not difficult,at a fraction of the cost of a "shop-clean"

cool - I have a mate that owns one for his canon. I'll ask him, thing is - the d2x I have needs some fancy adapter to lock the mirror in place... it says in the manual how to do it but does not do it with out the adapter.

Is there a way to blow it out with out that adapter?
Or should I just see the shop?

I attatched a shot of my baby with the spot for reference...

(this is with it mild, the longer the exposure - the darker it gets)

Might be worth asking on the Nikon forum - there are probably people there who've done the job hundreds of times on a D2x - I've done it once on a Fuji S3, where I just followed the advice in the manual.

It certainly looks like dust on your baby pic.

I can sympathise here. Being new to DSLR's myself I didn't know dust could be an issue. See my post in the Nikon Chat "D80 + Dust". I took some shots at small aperture (big f number) only to find marks on them.

I was advised to take a shot of a blank piece of white paper at min aperture (biggest f number) with focus at infinity. Download the photo and play with the brightness to see if the spots appear. On mine there was lots - it was shocking. I took a look at old shots and the marks were there just not noticed at the time.

Got some sensor wipes (not cheap) and some eclipse sensor cleaner, after some good work by the missus (she has a more careful hand than myself), now all seems well. Having tested again today the odd spot is there but nothing too bad. I'll now try and manage it better with a rocket blower at regular intervals.

Also, I have downloaded Adobe Elements 6 (free trial for 30 days) it has a spot removal tool - its incredible! Give that a try maybe.

Hope this helps.

thanks guys, very helpful. I have been healing the spot all the time now, but I do hate it!! There are some others, but barely visible. Until today I shot a 1.5 second shot of water and it was ruined!

The fancy gizmo you quote might well be a power unit to be used instead of a battery in which case you could still be ok without it and use wellcharged batteries instead.
Why don't you put a question in the Nikon Chat part of the forum, someone will know.
