I just found out they sell remote control model submarines – I mean what’s that about then? You go to a park, put it in the lake and stand there for an hour looking a complete prat or what?

Why bother buying a submarine... just stand beside the pond with a radio control device in your hand "pretending" to have a submarine...

Nope - you go to the park - put it in the water and then a while later get a net and some waders to fish it out as its stuck (somewhere) in the weeds in the water

Nah, you need the subs to defend your RC aircraft carrier from the local swans and ducks.

Hey how about a radio controlled Ark Royal - you could land radio controlled Buccaneers on it - now that would be impressive!

Then someone would come along with a radio controlled Nimitz.

Actually they are great fun and scare the s*** out of other boat modellers, though you do spend a lot of time wondering (a) where it is and (b) whether it will come up again or is stuck forever in the mud somewhere in the middle of the lake.
And yes, some can fire torpedoes

Many years ago, when I worked in a model shop come engineering works we built a 4ft long Fairmile MTB for a customer - it did actually fire torpedoes (no warheads I hasten to add). The 6pdr and bofors actually fired too - just the noise but it was quite effective. It wouldn't be allowed on most boating lakes now as most specify that electric power has to be used and this one had two 10cc diesels!

Slowly this remote control submarine palaver is starting to make sense.
I used to live in a park with a boating lake which had swan shaped pedaloes. One day I noticed they all had black plastic bags over their heads and necks. Turned out the real swans were attacking them!
I expect they'll have to stop calling them pedaloes now or parents will stop their children going on them. Actually come to think of it I'm sure children aren't allowed on a lake anyway - 12 inches of water can drown a child or even a teenager, if you hold them down long enough. Then there's always the risk they might get torpedoed (come to think of it is that a word we can use? I'll have to check with the Daily Mail).
