Anyone else have trouble switching music off? I put a cd on thinking I'll listen to it until I finish my glass of wine...now I'm topping up the glass waiting (leisurely) for it to finish.

I have no vodka, which would be a suitable alternative to opening a new bottle of red.
Though there is an opened bottle of Dimple whisky, but I have yet to acquire a taste for it.

I've got a really old CD player that doesn't have a stop button - just play and eject and I worry that pressing eject while it's playing might break something - but then I used to read The Valves in the Dandy (does anyone else remember the strip with the valves in the telly putting on all the shows?)
So I always listen to the end - it would be rude not to.

The fact that it's very old suggests that you aren't doing it any harm! Don't remember The Valves, but I do vaguely remember some kids programme that had little people inside the TV that came to life when it was switched on.

Only Mullards? What about Mazda, Pinnacle, Sylvania etc. I can still remember what most of the identifying letters and numbers defined. first letter defined the heaters 2nd and 3rd defined the valve function, A for diode, C for triode, etc, the first number defined the type of base connection, subsequent numbers were type numbers.
What a mine of useless information we retain.

My amp has 5x 12AX7, 1x 12AT7, 2x 6L6 and a 5AR4 rectifier.
If anyone can identify it they need help!

12AX7 is equivalent to an ECC83, a double triode (amplifier) with centre tapped 12.6V heaters which can also be connected across a 6.3v supply on a B7G base; the 12AT7 is the ECC 81 equivalent also a double triode IIRC a low noise one, probably the pre-amp, the 6L6s are the power amplifiers. The 5AR4 is the rectifier for power supply.
The line up is the same as used in Fender bassman and bandmaster amps.
Amazing what you can find on Google
(now where's the help?)
