First thing to do is to format the card in the camera.
Go into your menu and there should be an option called 'Format' - possibly under the set up or toolbox heading, I'm not familiar with the Sony set up - and run this to format the card. Then try the card again.

I cant access the menu with the memory card in. It just comes up with that message and will not let me see anything else on the screen.
I have also tried a friends memory card (which had pics on it) and the same message still appeared.

So the fault is in the camera.
Try cleaning the card contacts.

If it's a brand new camera, return it to the shop you bought it from.

Seconded.
Though I will say that it's a new fault to me, so you'd be very unlikely to get a replacement with the same fault (to set your mind at rest!)
