As a new (very new) convert to digital photography - I have just bought a Sony A200 kit. Question/s, I want to buy a
used 50mm f1.7, are they readily available and how much should I be prepared to pay, and filters, do I need them, if so why and when?

Sony experts will be able to help on the lens issue. On filters you may find a polarizing filter useful. They can increase the blueness and contrast in a sky but be careful with wide angle shots. The effect is most pronounced with the sun behind you but with a wide angle you can go from behind to side and end up with a dark sky one side and a light one the other. Polarizing filters can be used to control reflections such as taking pictures of animals under water. It needs to be what is described as a circular polarizing filter otherwise the autofocus may be confused. Otherwise you can do everything else on the computer. Some landscape (in particular) photographers use neutral density graduated filters. If you can afford it after buying the camera try and buy a good polarizing filter such as a Hoya Pro. They have a narrow bezel which is less likely to cause vignetting on wide angle shots. Also consider buying a polarizing filter that will cover all your lenses and then using reducing rings (Koods make very reasonably priced ones) on the smaller diameter lenses. Polarizing filters are quite expensive so being able to use just one is a worthwhile economy.

Minolta 50mm f/1.7 MD £39 at Mifsuds (as seen in AP, 12/07/08 issue).

This lens will not fit on a Sony digital body. Minolta 50mm af primes are not common, but do come up occasionally. Just keep an eye on the ads in AP and on the larger dealer websites.
