Techie Manfrotto Tripod question
      #676508 - 08/07/2008 23:35

I've managed to break the quick release plate on my tripod head. It's a Manfrotto 390RC Junior. However, when looking for a replacement there appears to be 2 different kinds, a 200PL-14 and a 200PL-38, the numbers referring to the thread size. The Manfrotto website lists the correct one as the 38 version, but the Morris website suggests that this is for large format only and recommends the 14. The release plate I have looks like neither of them but has worked with every camera I've tried it with, including 35mm SLRs and Medium Format. Any suggestions? I asked at a local phoographic shop about spare release plates a while back (just in case) and they suggested contacting Manfrotto, so going into a local shop and trying them is pretty much out. TIA.

I believe the Morris site is correct. SLR cameras, and a lot of medium format cameras, use a standard 1/4-inch Whitworth thread. Looking at the coupling plate shown it looks very similar to the ones I have for my 322RC head.

PS

According to the Manfrotto site it actually is the same QR plate as the 322RC2 so it will be the PL200-14 you want...

I assume you still have the damaged head so why not measure the thread size (or check what your cameras use) and phone Morris. I've found them pretty helpful.

I think it is Johnsons Photopia who deal with warranty issues for Manfrotto - they'd be bound to know.

The 200PL-14 comes with the 1/4" Whit screw which will fit the majority of 35mm, DSLR, compacts (if they've got a threaded hole!) and MF cameras. If your camera has the larger 3/8" hole, there's an adaptor to convert from 1/4 to 3/8 - and it's not as easy to make a too large screw fit a too small hole...

BTW, a quick look at the Manfrotto site shows the 200PL38 as an OPTIONAL plate for the 390RC head.

Thanks for that, the 200PL-14 it is then! I had vague burried memories that 1/4" was standard, but couldn't remember for sure.

The thread is UNC, not whitworth - they are virtually the same, but there is a difference (only know this because I need a bolt for my system as I'm putting a qr head on a macro plate and the normal bolt is too short) - I'm hoping my local Cromwells will stock something suitable.
