D60 Lens AF Motor Query
      #675258 - 06/07/2008 16:56

Am i right in thinking that any lens i attach to my D60 needs an AF motor to retain this function ?

You'll need a "DX" lens if you want autofocus....if that is what you are asking.

Irrespective of DX or not, you first assumption is correct - you will need a lens with built-in AF motor if you want it to auto-focus on the D60

Isn't the simple way of saying it "AF-S lenses will all work fine, others will lose AF/AF and metering." OR Are there non-AF-S lenses with built in motors?

See why I love Pentax's backwards compatability?

That brings me to a question of my own...do all AF-S lenses autofocus on the D40/D60 models?

IIRC all Nikon/Nikkor AF-S lenses should auto-focus on the D40/D60. For "third-party" lenses, you definitely need to check that they have inbuilt focussing motors. I have some Sigma lenses that auto-focus on my D40, and others that do not. All the Nikkor lenses that I own (AF-S) do auto-focus on my D40

Basically, you need AF-I or AF-S lenses for auto focus with a D60 (not all DX lenses are AF-S). Third party lenses with built-in AF motors are mostly designated HSM but some aren't (i.e. Sigma's 80-400 OS).

The only "DX - Digital Only" lens I'm aware of that is not AF-S is the 10.5mm fish-eye one.

Sigma provide an interweb page thinghy with a list of compatible lenses. I did wonder whether the 80-400 OS's inclusion was a mistake or not. Does it work on the motorless D Nikon cameras or not.
Also has AP ever tested that lens against Nikon's own aging 80-400 with the slow motor and early version VR. If not they are probably waiting for the new Nikon lens that never comes.

It does work, it is basically an AF-I lens.

Indeed. So my statement is correct.
