Just a few hours after purchasing my DA 50-135, I took a quick grab shot and (later that day) sent it off to a local paper and received an email from a friend mentioning a picture of mine had been published ....
Not my typical subject matter ...... . . . .

....but, hey, if it pays the bills
Cheers,
Jack

I never considered sending images in to mags and papers like that, could be a way of paying for the K20D. Well done that man.
What did you do, send it to the news editor?

Hi David,
Ordinarily I would send photo's to a News/Photo Editor and then wait to see if they run in the following days paper But this, particular, news paper is a bit different .... it is a weekly news/entertainment paper -- similiar to the TimeOut magasine in the UK. So, I email three(3) photo's a week (generally) on Sunday night as the paper hits the news stands on Thursdays. The pictures run on their TOC (table of contents) page and they generally look forward for something "thought provoking" -- definitely not mine -- or, now that they have gone full colour, 'very colourful' -- definitely mine ........ this time . I email the very general locations of the photo's along with my mailing address and contact info; then check the paper on Thursday (or Friday) to see if I can expect a cheque for £50 (equivalent ) in a few weeks or not....... and so the cycle continues
It is, actually, an interesting idea as it gets people out taking "quirky" (types of) pictures that they might not otherwise take
Cheers,
Jack

You are getting DOUBLE what my local newspapers pay ( the ones that pay ANYTHING that is! ) I get £25 a job. One local group can't afford to pay freelances anything, so if their staffers don't want to do a job it doesn't get done- BUT when they WERE giving out paid work they gave me PhotoShop7 and FotoStation free for this computer, and loads of film, so I do a few FREE jobs for them.

Hi ya Pete,
Long time no hear ... hope all is well:) and the first person I spoke to at the newspaper (actually) asked me "oh, do you want to be paid for your photo's?" and I said, "yes" so she had to put on to a senior editor who said "they could pay $150 for up to six(6) pictures ". So I said, "no" but I would take $150 for every photo they wanted to run ..they eventually got back to me with "we buy one picture for $150" . Mind you, that was for: This Set Of Pictures
Cheers,
Jack
