I've had my E-500 for over a year now, (my ist DSLR) and am totally happy with it. However, whilst trying to "learn" the Camera I get increasingly frustrated to have to insert a cd rom into the family computer to explore certain features or how to set up the metering etc. Does anyone know if the E-500 advanced cd-rom has been made into a printed instruction book, or if not,is there a commercial guide to the E-500 that anyone could recommend?

Whilst not getting away from the requirement of the PC, one could always copy the CD contents onto the hard drive, with a shortcut on the Desktop/Quick Start menu. Save you faffing with the disc, at least.

Thanks fatcontroller, but when i mentioned the family computer, I really meant that I have a Wife and 2 kids all demanding that dad get off the boring AP/WDC website so that they can communicate with "Grand Designs" Boy/girl friends, mates in that order. I just want an old fshioned book that I can reference without the 21st Century pressures as outlined above. Imagine in shed, glass of wine, E-500 plus book, quiet, can get on with it. Thats what I want!

If it's a PDF file you could always just print it out and bind it.

I feel for you, and I'm sorry if I rubbed salt into already festering wound.  
I too prefer paper to plasma when it comes to manuals, etc.

You could print off a copy from the pdf (not sure how many pages but printing as 'Draft' it should be cheaper than a guide book. I seem to recall that PIP or Magic Lantern done an E-500 guide but it may be out of print, I can't find a reference to it anywhere.
Alternatively you could print off this guide.
Using the E-500
That works out at around 20 pages.
edit You can buy the manual in printed from from
Old Timer Cameras
Probably printed from the CD of course and £12 approx would easily buy the ream of paper needed to do it yourself.

Have to agree, I actually printed off A4 size copies of both the E-1 and E-3 manuals as I didn't even like the small printed versions provided. It took quite a while, in fact if it hadn't been for the fact that Olympus took such a long time to get from the E-1 to E-3 I'd probably have had the E-3 before the E-1 manual had finished printing.

I think an electronic copy is great if it's online, as you can read it before you get the bit of kit, and have a head start. But it's no substitute for paper when you're really trying to get to grips with the camera/whatever.

The best thing I ever did was print out the entire E-500 manual. I have referred to it countless times and still do quite often. Just a thought, but maybe you could take the CD to a high street printers to rattle you off a hard copy. Might be cheaper than using home ink.

Thanks for all your replies, seems I will take Photocracy's advice and have a 3rd party print it off and have it A4 ringbound. My printer is a Lexmark and I reckon it'll cost me £ 50 in ink (No not really, but you know what i mean), but thinking about it, has no one done this before? I mean if they have then some printer company will have the manual on file, and could just print off at request.Any further thoughts?

Sorry Iloca, missed your post whilst looking at other replies, now have looked at the link to oltimers.com and have purchased the E-500 Advanced manual in print form. Brilliant, just what I wanted thanks.

My latest DSLR, bought s/h, came without the original manual, but instead with the manual decently printed in the middle of A4 sheets. (Probably from the pdf file.) Initially I wanted to have this ~100 sheets guillotined down to A6 and bound, but I now prefer using the A4 version which I've bound myself. (Plenty of space for notes etc.)
A few weeks ago, I bought a copy of the original manual, so if I do want to sell, I've now got the complete kit.
