Tamron SP 70-210/3.5 adaptall 2
      #670592 - 24/06/2008 17:35

Hi has anybody used this lens (the model 19AH constant f3.5 not the 52A f3.5-4)

From reviews it looks as though it was a good one in its time, how would you rate it optically against newer or current 70-210s of f4 or faster, e.g Minolta beercan, Tokina or Sigma 70-210/2.8 etc?

At the time, I couldn't afford the SP one, I have the "ordinary" version. Was a good enough lens in its day but I cannot bring myself to spend out the money on a Nikon Adaptall2 mount so that I can use it with my digitals. I think that lens technology has moved on and it is better to buy a modern-design of lens.

Yeah, I winced at the Adaptall/MAF adapters on Ebay, prices between 39.99 and 59.99 so I get round it by using Adaptall > M42 plus M42 > MAF, the M42>MAF one having a focus confirm chip; price still way below the direct adapters.

It is still a VERY good lens. You could pit it against any modern optic of a similar aperture/focal length and it would not let you down. The build quality is good, all metal construction, the only downside is the weight.

If anyone pays those prices for adaptall 2 mounts they have more dosh than sense. From the usual main 2nd hand dealers you won't pay more than say £20 for one even a Nikon fit.

I had, indeed still have one and found it great when I bought it for my A series Canons but have never compared it to my current digital Sigma 70-300. I think that if you can get a cheap adaptor it'd make a quite reasonable lens as at the time it was made it was considered a good buy.
