I knew you'd get the lens-buying bug!
If you'd gone down the Canon route then I'd have been able to advise...

Hi Steve
I know, feels like I'm trying to run before I can walk, but hey! Current lens (18-70) just does not zoom enough. Found myself looking longingly at a D3 in a mag the other day, had to give myself a talking to!

Hi Harry, no need to spend that sort of money, go for the Tamron 55-200/4-5.6

At that price I'd snap it up quick, last time I saw one in the local Jessops they wanted £199.99, I paid £56 +p&p on line for mine.
The f4 is from 55-120mm, then 4.5 > 160mm, 5 > 180mm then 5.6 from 180-200mm, at least that is on mine which is Minolta fit, see no reason for it to change with the fit.
You can use this while you do the weight training and saving up for an f2.8 Nikkor with image stabilisation.

Is that any food for that kind of money?
Do you get what you pay for when it comes to lenses, I looked at those and just discounted them cos they seemed too cheap?
Anyone have experience of Sigma
Thanks
Harry

I've had mine for about 18 months now no complaints.
Photodo review click here
Some user reviews from a Sony/Minolta forumclick here
Sony have badged it and upped the price (for the name) for the Alpha series.
Some people don't like the plastic body, but modern plastic bodies are probably almost as good as metal ones, better in some conditions, and a damned sight lighter.
Why not take your camera down to Jessops or other local dealer and ask if you can take a few shots with their demo lens, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Lots! Almost all of my current and previous lenses have been Sigma. I have the 55 - 200 f/4-5.6 in NAF fit that I use as a 'walkabout' lens on my D70s (for when the 100-300 f/4 is just too big/heavy!). I have to admit I haven't used it extensively, but when I have used it it turned out perfectly acceptable results. I see Warehouse Express have the HSM version at around £150.

I'd buy one if these before any Sigma or Tamron: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/7021056.htm Nikon 70-210D The only thing I would replace it with would be the 80-200 2.8 or the new 200mm 2.8VR...and those two are NOT walkabout lenses.

Update.
Bought the Tamron from Warehouseexpress, thanks for the tip-off there Gordon.
There are some shots in the Appraisal Gallery (Shot with New Lens).
Now saving for the Nikon 70-300 VR, seems to me no one has anything bad to say about it.
