Advice on a new compact
      #670144 - 23/06/2008 18:18

Hi guys, it's that time of year again, I'm in the market for a new compact.

Basically I'm after something small and compact that I will end up taking with me everywhee, it's essentially to complement my G9. Image quality is a very high priority, probably also half decent low light performance (for a compact).

Som manual control would be nice but not essential, li-ion battery for certain. Wide angle would also be something I'm looking for.

I was thinking about possibly the Panasonic FX35 or FX500, though I'm not sure about the size or touch screen of the 500. Possibly the Ricoh GRD-2 or maybe Fuji F50fd.

Any thoughts? Budget is up around £300 and I'll be buying from Jessops.

Thanks for any thoughts,

I've just got a Panasonic DMC-LX2, I like the 16:9 setting you might have to hunt for one though.

Just buy a bigger man-bag and use your G9. Spend the money on a new lens... or wild women... or a 40 year-old whisky... or a tandem para-glide in the Himalayas... or a pub lock-in for your mates... or a donation to a wild-life sanctuary... or...

I'm rather inclined to agree with John. You might find compacts rather disappointing after the G9. If you must you might consider one of the Olympus SW series, waterproof, dustproof, crushproof and drop proof. It would offer you facilities and photo opportunities that might not be available to the G9 and will, therefore, be complementary.

How about the Ricoh R7 that was (is still?) on offer? You probably get more than the 10% voucher code discount available to us mere mortals; the camera is small, light and has an almost-understandable user interface. It will leave you with plenty of change in your budget to buy some other nice photography stuff

I'd second the Ricoh suggestion (some Ricoh R6 pics of mine can be seen on the Flickr link in my sig).

There is also a view that when it comes to digital compacts, they all have various overlapping shortcomings so what you ultimately choose doesn't matter too much. I chose the R6 for its zoom range and the fact that it took SD cards - YMMV.
