E510 autofocus
      #669560 - 21/06/2008 22:31

just bought my E510 and am going through all the info etc.
Ive noticed that if I try to focus on the sky (ie infinity) the AF cant lock on and focus so it wont take a picture!

Like all other autofocus mechanisms ... some contrast is required in the region of the active AF sensor(s) in order for the mechanism to work.

If the Moon is in the sky, or there are some cloud with sharp outlines (like the billowy bits of a cumulus cloud, or a jet contrail), you should be able to focus on those. Do NOT under ANY circumstances attempt to focus on the Sun, you will very likely burn out both the camera and your eyesight!!!

Otherwise, focus on a distant object (a building roof, telephone pole or something similar, hundreds of yards away) then either hold focus by keeping the shutter release half pressed whilst recomposing or switch to manual focus mode.

thanx
seems you can't focus on infinity so what you say makes sense. If I selected the MF mode would this work?
The last SLR I had was an OM10!

Should do ... in manual focus mode the thing works like an OM10 i.e. if it's in focus in the viewfinder it should be in the image too.

However note that with AF lenses it's usual for the lens focusing ring to turn some way "past infinity", don't assume that the lens is focused at infinity just because you've turned the ring as far as it will go.

It's actually difficult to manually focus on the E510, because of the lack of focussing aid and the size of the viewfinder. Also, the kit lenses have no focussing scale on them (common to most brands) But the focus control is not physically coupled, so there is no place you "can't turn it any more". That means you can happily spin it till the focus stops moving.

As a matter of course, I tend to leave the focus to S-AF+M - that allows you to trim the AF if you think it has it wrong.

OK, if that's difficult then do one of the things I suggested in my first reply.
