Dumb question, probably. But they seem expensive for what they are... or am I simplifying things.
Any DIY tips for making one appreciated

For a light duty one, cut the sleeve(s) off an old shirt and sew up one end, fill with plastic granules (as used in injection moulding) and sew up the other end. For heavier duty ones, use trouser legs. (If there's any chance of the bag getting wet, beans or rice can absorb the water and start rotting, hence the plastic granules if you can find them)
To make them lighter for travel purposes (and to save space), wait until you reach your destination then buy enough dried beans or rice to fill the bag. As a quick fix if you forget to take an empty with you, a clean sock (even a dirty one but remember where your nose will be while using it...) can be filled with beans or even the other sock to give some support.

If you decide to follow this advice, please be very careful to not let any of these granules escape. They're very bad for the environment, especially to birds who often get their guts fatally clogged with these. Birds appear to mistake them for grain, fish or insect eggs or whatever else they eat.

I tried a home-made one once, but the tomato sauce made the brown paper go soggy and it all ended up as an indescribably horrid mess at the bottom of my camera bag.

I'm not dumb enough to use beans in tomato sauce -- but I was wondering how to stop the beans defrosting

Buy some camo style cloth from a sewing/textile shop and sew in to a bag. Buy some pinto beans from a grocers/ natural health food shop etc. Put beans in plastic bag so they don't get wet and rot. Put bag of beans in camo cloth bag. You could also waterproof the bag with some Nikwax type product if you wished.
Well........that's how I did it.
