A friend of mine is contemplating buying a K20D as his first digital slr, having been using film for some time. He has asked my advice about the Sigma 18-200 f3.5-6.3 lens. I have not got one, so if anyone has and can give some pointers as to image quality, then that would be great.
I have suggested the Pentax 50-200 f4-5.6 and the Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.5 combination. Any comments on the 50-200 would also be helpful. I have the 17-70, so no help needed there.

Hmmm, just noticed on the Sigma site that the 18-200 is not available in Pentax fit......

Why not the Pentax 18-250? Would seem the obvious choice...

I would suggest the combination of the Pentax 18-55mm and 50-200mm lenses. Inexpensive, very good quality, uniform operation, filter sizes the same, compact and low weight.

Thanks John, I will pass it on. He is also looking at the Tamron 18-250, but I was concerned about possible problems with colour fringing and distortion with such a wide zoom range.
John, your suggestion is a good one, because he has to buy the lens kit anyway to get the £100 cash back offer.

... the Pentax DA 18-250 and here are sample pics (showing the zoom range)
and
a link to some large files done with the Pentax DA 18-250 @ the 250 end :shocked;
Granted the DA 18-250 is a little more expensive than the DA 18-55/50-200 combo but it is virtually
the same price as the Tamron 18-250 and I have found, from personal experience, the less you have
to change lenses the better

Thanks for that jack, nice to hear from you again. I thought you might have dissapeared under a mile of snow!
We don't get much here anymore, due to 'Global warming', it just stays cloudy all the time. it is midsummers day today and we have 100% cloud cover.
Not the best conditions for vibrant colour photography.  We are all a bit tiffed (polite version) off with it. I expect you are going to tell me it is gloriously sunny and warm there!
