Newbie - Digital Camera for Child
      #667185 - 16/06/2008 13:31

Hi.

My daughter is going on a school adventure trip, and on the school items list to take, states disposable camera.

This is her last year at this school and i would like to
to buy a cheap but good quality digital camera for her to take instead.

We have used disposable cameras in the past and they were rubbish.

Be grateful for any help.

You can get good disposable cameras and theyre a lot easier to use

I suppose it depends on your budget - how much is 'cheap' for you? Im not sure cheap equates with good quality but I suppose it depends on your expectations. What was it about the disposable that was rubbish? Is there any other reason than price that they want a disposable? Is she gonna get picked on for being 'above' the others if you send her off with a digital?

Hi

Thanks for reply.

Re: Is she gonna get picked on for being 'above' the others if you send her off with a digital?

No! they are all good friends and glad to say it would never
happen.

This is one of the reasons for the digital camera to take lots of pics of her class mates etc.

I'm looking at paying £30 -£40.

Thanks

Try an ebay compact film camera. They are IME, streets ahead of a crappy £40 digital camera.

Something like this... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/OLYMPUS-TRIP-MD-35...1QQcmdZViewItem

Yep, youre not going to get much quality out of a £30-40 jobbie In fact a good disposable would probably do a better job. I do wonder if the bad disposable problem was with the camera or the lab?

You reckon? I think the sort of grotty lenses cheap film cameras like that one have, allied to poor D&P would make me stick with digital, and wouldn't look any further than this. Decent quality in a cheap package - my kids both have older versions of it, and they've been great for normal print sizes, and quite acceptable for the odd A4.

I think you're being a bit harsh on digi compacts there. They may not be great for action shots but I think you can get decent shots from a digi compact. The compact I've had for a couple of years could be bought for under £20 last time I looked and my GF recently had a batch of compacts that produced decent results, she sold the lot for between £25 and £40 each and people were happy with them.

At least with a digi she can review the results and retake if needed, you can't do that with a compact film camera and if the shots don't turn out the chance to retake them has gone. I think it's perfectly possible to get a digi compact that'll give decent results for between £20 and £40.

The important thing when buying 'techi' things for children is not to be patronising. It doesn't matter whether we are talking about a rising 11 at the end of junior school or a secondary leaver. They know what they want but need you to inject as much realism as adult experience dictates.

I did, but it appears you've missed them.

There might be some more listed later, though.

Try your local Argos or Tesco Extra if you are looking for new stuff.example:
http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/pa...l%2Bcameras.htm
For used items, well, I have a Canon Powershot S60 that I bought for under £40 via a certain internet auction site but you may need to wait a while and be prepared to conduct some minor repairs yourself.
PS A430, A460 are also regularly available lightly used or reconditioned on the same site for around £30

Check Asda or Argos to see what they're "cheap camera of the week" is.

Don't go for the Vivitar (with the waterprrof housing) that Asda sell for £40 though. My girlfriend has one and the picture quality is incredibly poor.

The best bargains are probably those with unfashionably low pixel counts.

What a surprise

The fashion for cameras with tiny sensors having insanely large pixel counts must have some explanation ... image quality was never it, though.
