Hi, I have a PS A60 which I have had for 6-7 years, and I would like to upgrade. Currently I only use this for holiday snaps and the occasional party photo, so it sits in the draw for 50 weeks of the year. I would like to learn more about photography and inmprove the camera; I visited Jacobs in Cardiff this week and was introduced to the G9, (very sexy piece of kit) but would like your advice on whether this is a sensible option? Are there other camereas within the range that I should consider or just jump in? Thanks in anticipation Peter

Hi Peter and welcome to the madhouse!
The G9 is an excellent camera for you to upgrade to, with many control options for you to explore and learn - just don't expect to master everything at once.
As to other possibilities, there are almost too many to choose, but there are several of the high end Canon A series which offer fairly comprehensive manual control - about the only thing they lack is RAW format image files, and even that can be added by a third party firmware hack.
Canon are about the only manufacturer that still fits optical viewfinders to compact cameras.
If you have a look in the Help Team forum, there are several sticky posts about choosing a camera that you might find helpful.

Depends on your aspirations... the G9 would be a good upgrade, but then there is something like the Fuji S9600 or S6500fd to consider... or you could go "the whole hog" and buy into a dSLR. If you are used to the Canon menu systems and control placement etc, then the G9 should be very easy to get to grips with. There is the alternative of the S5is but I have a feeling that the G9 will produce better quality results

Hi Guys, Thank you for the welcome. It was after reading the various notes on the message board that prompted me to ask the question. My problem was one of lacking confidence in my own common sense, i.e. was I just sold a camera that the salesman wanted to sell. Your comments have been a help to make me decide. No doubt in a few weeks I will be the proud owner of a G9
