Hi all,
I've had some useful insights into good locations on here recently and am back with another request.
Basically I'm looking for some good coastal/beach locations in /EssexSuffolk/South Norfolk (the closer to Essex the better!) I'm not necessarily looking for dramatic landscape scenery but a location with some interesting subject matter. It's for the landscapes module on the Diploma Course run through AP. I've pretty much set my heart on coastal landscapes and need somewhere fairly close to home in South Essex so I can visit at different times of the day
Hope someone can give me some pointers!
thanks in advance

Anywhere between Felixstowe & Lowestoft really...
Sizewell is a bit different with the nuclear power stations & fishing boats and Southwold is home to the classic beach hut shot & has a pier & rather cluttered harbour.
Thorpeness is a very picturesque deigner village with fascinating architecture a very large pond & Aldeburgh, with the boats on the beach, is quite interesting too. Dunwich is crumbling away nicely but can be quite moody.
Lowestoft & Gt Yarmouth are a bit grim Further up the Norfolk coast Winterton & Sea Palling are pleasant sandy beaches with dunes, but maybe a touch boring. Happisburgh is rather more interesting (if it's still there...)

On my last visit to Gt Yarmouth, 30 months ago, I vowed that I must return and snap all the significant older and idiosyncratic buildings before they get improved or bulldozed away. But, I still haven't made the trip.

Some excellent suggestions so far. I'd like to add Shingle Street and Benacre.
It depends what type of beach you're after. There are some magnificent broad sandy beaches in North Norfolk. Holkham is superb. A long sandy beach flanked by pine forests which has featured in a few films over the years. Brancaster is another favourite of mine. Another wide beach with the added bonus of a wartime shipwreck for added photographic interest. The ship was sunk there deliberately during WW2 to allow pilots some target practice before D-Day. To get up close you have to paddle across a river which runs across the beach when the tide is out. It can be done with extreme care and awareness of the tide.
The Suffolk beaches are almost all shingle if that's what you're after.
If you're prepared to move inland a bit try Maldon in Essex. It has a nice quay with old Thames barges moored up. You could also try the Butt and Oyster pub in Suffolk, just up-river from Felixstowe. It's a fine, very old pub with more Thames barges outside (I believe they are restored there).
Happy hunting

Anyone been to Orford Ness? The website looks interesting and I've been wanting to go for a while, but not made it yet.

As you say, Orford Ness looks interesting but with restricted access. I'd like to take my own time visiting the pagodas.

Orford Ness is a fascinating place - well worth buying the guide book for once!
It's NT property and you have to go over and return on their boat so early/late light is probably impossible unless you are working for NT and have special permissions. You also have to stick to the waymarked routes (ground nesting birds and munitions!) and these do not get close to the Pagodas (but do allow you to walk into one of the testing facility/bunker buildings). You can walk right up to the lighthouse though.
It's a vast site and NT are employing a managed decline of the structures - excellent for wildlife but off limits for togs. Wear good walking boots and take a packed lunch.
The best view of the pagodas is from the 'Chinese wall' south of Orford town at dawn...
