Ok, Having just purchased a New D60 Kit 18-55mm VR i have been looking into additional lens when i am flush sorta.
Well jeez just how good are these £1,000.00 plus lens ??
I quite fancied a nice little set to go with my VR that came with the Camera.....OUCH
Nikon 70-200mm AF-S f/2.8 VR IF-ED £1,219.99
Nikon 200-400mm AF-S f/4 G IF-ED VR £4,499.99
Nikon AF-S 600mm f/4 VR IF-ED Lens £6,499.99
That's like £12,219.97......Do you think i would get a discount ?
Has anyone here actually brought one or more of these Puppies ????? Come on don't be shy !!!
So as i am curious or Bleedin nosey....What have you and how much Mortgage money was sacrificed for the pleasure of owning one

Absolutely useless.....
...in the hands of a crap photographer.
If on the other hand you're a good photographer and can make good use of them...then more often than not they tend to be pretty darn good (so I'm told...)

I'm a proud owner of the 70-200 F2.8 VR and there is no turning back on the beauty.

I have the 70-200 f2.8 VR which is seriously compromised on the D3, edge performance is poor. It should really be seen as a DX lens. Not so the 200-400 which is fabulous, but a real handful; very heavy. The world of the fixed length long lenses is a rarified one, out of my league.

Neither, all useless unless they are Canon EF fit.

I wish I had £1000 or more to spend on a lens. IMHO you need to be really dedicated to photography and/or have a lot of money to buy these items. Acceptable results for the amateur must be available for much less money. Sort-of the diminishing law of returns

I've got the canon 70-200 2.8 IS. I just like shiney kit. Lots of people spend £1000s a year on their hobby. I could easily spend over £2000 a year if I smoked 20 a day, and drank 5 pints on every friday night, so I dont have a problem justifying to myslef why I should spend that much money on what I want

Even by professionals they are more likely to be hired when needed rather than owned ... particularly the last two.

All my lenses (4) are L (Canon) and the cheapest was about £500 the dearest was £3600 (S/H 600/f4). Why spend that amount when I'm strictly amateur? Well I'm now semi-retired and my income has significantly reduced. I reasoned that if I didn't get what I wanted before I retired then I never would. I do accept that it is a lot of money but I had the full support of my wife and as I don't smoke, gamble or drink could argue that those would cost us more than my photography 'habit'.

Agree except that there are some things you can do with e.g. a 400mm f/2.8 lens that a sub-£1000 lens is going to be seriously compromised. In the end you have to decide whether your money is worth spending on a specialist lens that enables you to do something you think worthwhile.
In that sense, every bit of photographic gear - even a single-use camera - is a luxury.

Eventually I want 3 of the big lenses
17-55 2.8 or 24-70 2.8
70-200 2.8
and a 300 f4
I wouldnt want to stick any of them on a d40 or D60 though. I mean the 18-70 feels unbalanced on my D40..

Yes this is my 'most expensive' lens - truly fantastic results.
