Does anyone use Lightscribe for labelling cd's or dvd's?
If so is it any good? Do you have any issues with it?

Yes - I've labelled some DVDs with it - it takes a while to burn the image onto the disc (monochrome only), and you'll need a fairly dark setting for it to show up (the darker it is, the longer the time taken).
The main problem might be that they fade over time - if kept out of sunlight this ought not to be a problem; I've just checked some I burnt last year and they're still fine. I've only burnt text, not graphics though.
Otherwise, its a different take on labelling. If you've got a capable drive then why not try it - the discs aren't that much more expensive than normal ones.

It came with my new PC so I gave it a try. Not impressed, so I bought an Epson Stylus PHOTO R220 printer from Tesco just before they all disappeared from the shops.
Must say, I'm very impressed with the R220. It does a good job of printing CDs and DVDs, was perfectly aligned so I didn't need to do any "calibration" runs, and on Epson Premium Glossy paper, it gives me a better* print than I get from my 1270. (*It lays the ink just where required and nowhere else, but I needed a magnifier to see this improvement.)
I've no idea what printer has replaced my R220 in today's lineup.

Because if you want to give (or even sell) a disk handwritten labels look tacky to say the least. Also my handwriting skills leave a lot to be desired.
For other contributors - no I don't have a lightscribe drive but need to add a cd/dvd writer to my wife's machine and wondered whether to buy one. I suppose that they are much the same price as other types so nothing would be lost by trying. then it's a good deal cheaper to buy and run a new DVD writer than it is to buy a new printer.

I have lightscribe but I'm not that impressed with it. I used to use an Epson 2100 but swapped it with my daughter for her Epson 950. (She could make more use of A3 and I had my 4800 for larger stuff anyway). The 2100 was fine for CDs/DVDs but I could never get the register right on the 950. It seemed to move around from one disk to the next. I agree a printed one looks better than a lightscribe and as for sending out a disk that is hand written  .

A decent lightscribe drive can be had for £22 (inc software and different bezels). At the end of the day, if you don't like what it does, then don't use it and you can use some other labelling solution.

We have used it a couple of times and people have been impressed with the results.
We have had requests for lightscribe discs instead of printed ones

Yep, my dvd writer is lightscribe capable (they nearly all are nowadays if you buy a new one). I've used it once I think and yes it was nice but it's a bit of a faff and as has been mentioned it's monochrome only. I prefer to use good old "pressit" type sticky cd labels which work out much cheaper and you have the option of colour which you don't have with lightscribe. So yes to lightscribe, for an occasional "special" cd/dvd but for general use it'll be the sticky labels for me.
On the subject of DVD writers in general, you might want to hold off a while before purchasing one Mick because "blueray" is the new DVD standard which we'll all be using in the future and prices are dropping by the day on that!

I would agree with other - Lightscribe looks good but is slow. I occasionally use it for discs I want to be well presented but not otherwise
