Hi-
I have a Tamrom 500mm Reflex lens with an adaptall K mount (for my trusty k1000) which I bought used. Paid ~$75 for all of it.
Lately, I've been wanting to use it on my Samsung GX-1L (*ist D clone) and of course, the 'sung goes nuts because it can't read the adaptall mount and therefore I can't use it.
Now on ebay, there are tamron adaptall KA mounts (which I'd need) but the price is $100 and up.
I can buy a new 500mm reflex lens for less than that, designed specifically for a digital, from ebay, but they are made by Phoenix or Opteka. The question I have, is the Tamron reflex head and shoulders better than those other two offerings to warrant the cost of the adaptall mount, or should I just buy a new reflex lens and if so, Phoenix or Opteka (or are they one and the same?)
Or is there another option I have not considered?

As it has a fixed aperture of f8, the camera should just deliver the appropriate shutter speed in Av mode. Effectively the lens is at full aperture all the time, which is fine. I don't think in this case you would even have to allow the use of the aperture ring. It should work fine.

Hi A_D,
If you can get a Tamron PK-A Adaptall Mount, you should have all the features of the camera With the Exception of AF and, as mentioned by John, changing of the aperture.
Cheers,
Jack

The Samsung simply flashes "Av" in the top lcd part repeatedly, when the reflex lens is attached as it is, which is why I was asking either:
(a) is the Tamron high enough quality to justify the cost of the adaptall AF mount, over the cost of buying a new 500mm reflex lens already designed for digital cameras
or
(b) is there something I missing on my GX-1L (ist D clone) that would allow me to use the len as it is? I set the switch to "MF" and no matter what other setting I put on the camera (Av, M, B, etc) the main LCD screen flashes white briefly, then goes dark, and the "Av" blinks in the top LCD screen...

Av is flashing to indicate that the camera cannot read the aperture, but notwithstanding this you should be able to set the camera to Av and allow it to select a shutter speed that will change depending on the lighting level. If that doesn't work, then enable the use of aperture ring in the cutom menu and try again. It still won't read an aperture, but it will take pictures in Av mode that should be perfectly fine.

Just to add a bit, I think John is saying select Av mode, then set f8 as the aperture, which is what the lens is set to. The the camera will meter the shutter speed. It doesn't need to read the lens data.

Almost. Non-A lenses will operate at open aperture in Av mode. With the reflex lens open aperture is the only aperture anyway, so it isn't a problem.
Just take some pictures and see what happens!

Thanks John, I wasn't aware of this as all of my lenses are 'A' type.

Well I can take pinhole pictures with no lens attached. I use manual mode. Try that, and take a meter reading by twisting the on/off switch to the stop down setting (you may need to fiddle a custom setting to use 'proper' depth of field check rather than 'digital preview'.
That might just do it.

Score!!!!
Three cheers for John Riley!!
>>If that doesn't work, then enable the use of aperture ring in the cutom menu and try again<<
That was off (by default?) and by turning it on, although the aV flashes, it takes pics, and works well! This is fantastic, means I don't have to buy a new camera lens!!!
Hip Hip Hooray!!!
Now, if I leave that aperture ring setting on...will this affect any of my normal (designed for my digital camera) lenses? In other words, should I turn it on only when using the reflex lens, or can I leave it on at all times with no ill effects?
Cheers!

I have mine turned on all of the time. It seems that when the ring is in 'A' position, the camera knows and it all works normally.
