Not restarting.
It's my old PC, don't use it that much as I mostly use the laptop + big monitor.
It started a few weeks ago. I was getting ready to go to work when I heard the fan on the PC going. I turned on the monitor and the log on screen was showing. "Strange" I thought to myself "I can't remember leaving it on last night."
Thinking that I might have selected 'restart' instead of 'shut down'
Anyway, I shut the computer down and though nothing of it.
But since then the computer has turned itself on several times. Last night I was working on the laptop and suddenly the PC turned itself on again!
I've checked all the system settings, nothing wrong there. There's no virus or trojan on the machine either.
In fact it isn't even connected to the internet or a network!
Anyone have any ideas as I'm stumped!

Are you having any power cuts?
Maybe the bios will power up the PC if it detects a power source (and if you're having power cuts, when it comes back on then the PC will think it's just been plugged in).
Maybe a dodgy wall socket could replicate a mains drop out.

Nope. It's on a surge protected blok along with some other stuff including the laptop.
My current thinking is perhaps a loose wire behind the on/off button. Will strip it down at the weekend and check for that.
Other than that... stumped

could it be that the internal battery (for date, time, etc...) has almost died? i know that with my mums old computer when the battery inside died it went back to 1st jan 1970 (or something) and no programs wanted to work... would more modern computers have a back up where they'd turn themselves on to avoid this happening?

The BIOS doesn't happen to have the 'wake me up at this time' setting set, does it?

Is it set to wake on a press of a keyboard key and something is knocking the keyboard?
Unplug it from the mains. That will stop it. :-)

You can set a computer to power on from ethernet/keyboard/mouse etc etc. Have you checked the settings?

Maybe the computer is haunted? The ghost might be toying with you.

I think it could be either the motherboard or PSU switching circuits. Have had something similar which was the PSU so it might be worth trying another one.
As I understand it (and I could well be wrong-again!) the switch on the case activates the power circuit on the MB which tells the PSU to fire up, turn off or hibernate.
