Recently I was thinking about how I take, use and show digital photographs, particularly those that record an event or people (eg weddings, holidays etc). In the olden days I would take a film, get it D&Ped and then hand the packet around to friends and family.
These days I often take more photos but they end up on my PC and not that many people see them. I will usually make them available via a website but not everyone can or does take a look. Besides, I like the instant feedback of people's faces and reactions when they look at your pictures.
So, I was thinking, is there a digital equivalent to the packet of enprints? I was thinking of an electronic device into which I can insert a card (SD, CF etc) which would have a screen around 7"×5" that the user could use to view pictures on the card (so no need for internal memory).
I know there are digital photo frames, but these aren't really designed for hand-holding and passing around. I also don't want or need the additional functionality of a multi-media device like an Archos.
Does such a thing exist? A reasonably extensive Google search didn't turn anything up.

Digital frame in a box? As you pointed out, there are already the storage devices with screens - and there are also the likes of the ASUS eeepc. Not to mention the tiny (keyring) photo frames - as spotted on 7day for notalotawonga.
Personally, if I have some digital photos to show people, I either take a storage key (if I know thay have a PC and can show them) or one of those old fashionned things - an album of prints!

Thanks for looking!
Another application I had in mind was instant reviewing of pictures taken in a day. For example I take a load of pictures of people at equestrian events and they like to look through them at the end of the day and sometimes perhaps select one or two for printing. At the moment they use the screen on the back of my camera but this has its limitations. If I could whip out the card, stuff it in my device and hand them that it would make this easier.

Would a 7" (diagonal) screen be that much better for viewing than the LCD on the back of a camera?
For instant "proofs" (albeit completely "as is" from the camera - no sharpening etc) how about a little Canon Selphy printer? Just plug the card in, select the shot(s) to print and away it goes. Some can be battery powered (for about 36 shots IIRC) and they are Dye Sub (so no liquid inks to escape...). Probably the ultimate answer is a trolley with a laptop, A4 printer, 12V battery and an inverter - a complete dry room in one convenient package!

I've just got myself a 10" philips photoframe. These do have elements of what you want for 'passing around'...
They are rechageable so you can unplug to pass round. It also has automatic picture rotation, so if you turn the frame 90 degrees it automaticall rotates the picture to so you can view portrait/landscape at full screen. I've been really impressed by the display quality (some are terrible).
So - it would do the job - but it's not a dedicated product so chucking ina bag etc isn't great as they're no screen protection etc.

I am coming to the conclusion that the phot frames are the closest to what I am imagining. Do they take CF cards? I can check myself I guess.
I'm kinda surprised there's nothing out there. Maybe it's only me that wants one!

Yes they do, at least mine, the simply excellent Philips7FRFICWO does. It can also be battery powered so can be passed from hand to hand.
When I get time, what I'm hoping to do is use my PDA as a portable display device. The LCD screen is only a little larger than my D300's screen, but it is so portable. What's delaying me is I've had no luck in the past finding out how to create a simple slideshow for, but I'm going to try and get it up and running again as soon as I can as when I'm in Edinburgh for the festival I'll want something to show people my work on.

Brilliant, just what I was looking for! (But obviously not hard enough eh? )

Hmmmm.... I do have an old HP iPAQ sitting here doing nowt - I never thought of that. I even have a jacket that will take a CF card! I seem to remember that accessing big files was slow though. I'll have a play - cheers!

I've just sorted out my PDA and it makes an ideal portable display. I have a 1GB card in it and with the photos scaled to fit the screen there's no delay in accessing them.

Yeah I scale them to the 320/320 [TE] screen, as there's not much point making it bigger, unless I transfer over a map [e.g. the last job interview I had was in an industrial estate] so I can zoom in and check the streets I need to follow. Yeah I could print it out, but I've got the organiser with me anyway .
