If you were photographing a wedding in a register office with no windows and you weren't allowed to take photos during the actual ceremony (only signing the register), due to the flash, would you still take them without flash, using a high ISO, or would you just take them signing the register aswell as outdoors before and after?

Due to the Data Protection Act, I thought that they had banned photographs of the register, anyone confirm this?

Yep, I'd always take as many pictures as I could because, that way, you're playing the percentage game and are likely to get some that work. Having said that, if you're going to be expected to come up trumps with a free album for the bride and groom, I'd make sure they realise that you don't have high hopes of being able to capture the event under those conditions.
Shooting at ISO 400 should be fine, ISO 800 will probably have noticeable grain and anything above that might be problematic, depending on your camera. I'd shoot in aperture priority, so I could set the minimum shutter speed that I thought I could hand-hold (around 1/30th of a second perhaps) and then let the aperture look after itself, but knowing that I'd probably not have a lot of depth-of-field.

I don't get that. You would shoot in aperture priority mode so you could set the shutter speed? I thought the camera set the shutter speed in aperture priority mode?

John you know that's called 'shutter priority' I think Op has enough to sort out without more confusion

John you know that's called 'shutter priority' I think Op has enough to sort out without more confusion
John's not referring to a D300 is he? If so you can shoot in aperture priority and set a minimum shutter speed which, when light falls to the point that the shutter speed isn't long enough, the camera will automatically up the ISO until the exposure is correct.

Yes, you are correct Coz (what is your real name?), you set the aperture that you want and the camera selects the shutter speed.
