Hi Carole, I'm glad you like my pic of the Angel of the North. I was trying to decide how to photograph it when the 3 girls walked up, I moved out of their way and then managed to get a shot as they walked off.
I think the girls really make the pic, well done for luck & good timing

I agree there's empty space on the right but I like the line of the wing pointing into the corner of the frame.
I like the way you have it, the crop suggestion was for an additional image - gives quite a different feel, I think

I hope you have a good time on your holiday - where are you going?
south wales, near Carmarthen. It's a big family thing, but I'm hoping to be able to escape for a bit and do some landscape photography (as well as pics for mods 8 & 9 ....... no pressure then ). I'm even thinking of trying to get up early and try for sunrise shots (though that depends on what sort of nights we get with the kids - always a bit hit and miss on holiday, but I am optimistically packing the tripod ..... probably the kiss of death for getting any sleep ... )

And the Annabel Williams course sounds like just the thing to set you up for your project. Please let us know how you get on.
let's hope so - I'd better follow through on my promises and get through the next few mods quite quickly so that I haven't forgotten it all by the time I get to mod 10

I got my mod 9 back from Barney at the weekend. I did OK despite all my moaning. He says he likes a bit of contrast in his b&w pics, not that I'm giving you a hint or anything. Lisa.

Look out for our black and white special issue (dated 7th June and on sale 3rd June). There are a few techniques that might help with your monochrome images.

Hopefully with mod 9 behind you the hatred has dimmed?
Personally I love mono, even converted my colourful graffiti pictures from a recent trip to Manchester to mono!
Good luck with your project

Thanks Dave. I like the Quay Quad image on your website.
I'm still not very keen on b&w though I'm afraid. Lisa.

I've been struggling with part C. The problem is I don't possess optical filters for black and white but I do have a whole set of digital 'filters' including Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, Pink and Purple!!
Thought I'd use the RGB ones to simulate optical filters but most of the results I've been getting are dreadfull! The digital 'filter' just adds a dose of colour to each pixel and the result doesn't convert to mono in a way I like.
I'm going to use normal colour images and convert to mono using the appropriate channel.

When you say you have 'digital filters' do you mean physical filters that you fit to your lens? In which case if they are fairly strong colours the red, green and yellow will certainly do the job - I've used filters and produced very similar results to using monochrome film with the same filters. Here they are image captured in RGB and desaturated from filtered original -
To a certain degree tagging the word Digital onto things is a marketing gimmick - when CDs came out, for instance, they started to use the word digital on headphones - there's nothing digital about a filter or headphones in that context.
You should be able to look through your filters and see how certain colours seem relatively brighter or darker reds will seem to leap out seen through the red filter and so on. If that is the case then the colours once recorded in RGB will, when converted to greyscale for instance, seem correspondingly altered (but obviously without the strong cast your camera has recorded.) Its easier to judge the results once you know what you are looking for - many viewers looing at the examples above have struggled to see the differences but they are huge!
On page 30 of this week's AP Angela explains about using filters on a digital camera in more detail.

I haven't got any B&W filters at all Chris. I just used the basic R, G or B channel coversions for Part C. Lisa.

Lisa, get a big tin of Quality Street - each one contains a plentiful supply of filters - you just need to remove the chocolate from inside - you'll find red ones, yellow ones and green ones. You can send the purple ones to me as they are no use at all - really no use at all.

Thanks for your reply Gary. By 'digital filters' I mean it's a setting in the camera's menu that appears to add the chosen filter's colour to the image when it is proccesed, much like adding a stain. They aren't a physical filter of any sort so they wont modify the amount of each colour reaching the sensor as an optical filter does.
I think this means that selecting the red digital filter for example, just electronically adds the same amount of red to all the pixels whereas using a red optical filter in front of the lens would let a lot of red light from the scene through making red things in the mono conversion lighter but restrict the amount of blue making a blue sky appear darker. The 'digital' filter doesn't do that!
Must rip the plastic off this weeks AP and get reading, I've been looking forward to Angela's article (Haven't finished last week's mag yet though!)

Have to say a big thank you to Angela for her Mono Magic article in AP. I found it very useful, especially the Highlight Recreation and Contrast Masking techniques

I think you should be marked down accordingly for having an unfair advantage.
Well done, as you say 'only one more to go!'

Yep I can see where I'm going wrong now!! I particulary like the vase and train photos (I would make some comments but flickr is being awkward). Your pics are a lot more 'structured' than mine and work better in b&w. I think you have to have a 'colour head' and a 'b&w head' - I've just got to work on my 'b&w head' some more. Lisa.
