I am fairly sure this question has been asked before, but is there anyway that the history or the list of actions taken can be recorded in PS?
I worked on an image the other night for about an hour and after experimenting with different blending modes and layer overlays and a whole load of other stuff and tweaks etc, the resulting image looks rather good, but can I heck remember how I did it. I know an action would record everything you are doing, but if you are only experimenting and do not know if the outcome is going to be any good, it seems an overcomplicated way to record everything when you might only wish to isolate the successful parts of the operation. I suppose a pencil and paper might do the job, but surely someone has invented or created a way to do this in a better way than pencil and paper? Any ideas?
Any help appreciated.
thanks - 9pins

well there is the undo and redo buttons in edit which can take you back or forwards in a step = but I don't think that they will give you a readout of the specific settings that you used for a process - however the data is clearly there in the program. However this only works whilst you are editing the photo = after you close and open the editor I think the dump with all that info might be dumped

In PS edit Preferences -> General -> History Log
You can elect to save the history in metadata (in the file) or to an external file or both.

Mmm, tried that, it only seems to register things like "open file", "close file", "Save file", etc, which I can sort of remember.
What I really want is what I did with the file in more detail step by step, so I can replicate the successful parts of it on another file.
But thanks anyway, still worth a look I suppose, but not detailed enough really for what I want.
Any other ideas out there?

Sorry, never actually set this option myself. I thought, like you, it would record more data.

I know you said Actions seemed a complicated way of doing things, but if you do record it as an Action from the beginning you can always quickly apply the Action to the original again and watch it go through to see what was/wasn't successful. Also you can tick and untick the Action boxes to remove unsuccessful stages. (Although beware problems involving selections and image sizes).
The problem with History is it takes up so much memory. The way I do it is taking a Snapshot of any stage I think successful that I may want to go back to, because it will save the history to the stage.
You can also lengthen the amount of history you allow PS to save somewhere, I cant remember where though. It just takes up so much memory though. EDIT: Found it: Prefernces > General > History States.

Hmm just checked in on my machine and if you tick "Detiled" under "Edit Log Items" it does record absolutely every single move I made. But it is immensely boring reading through it and I can't see much use in it saying Levels or whatever if it doesn't tell me what it was I did with my Levels for example.
Sorry cant help

I think the only way is to record it as an action. But actions are only recorded if there is a change of state. So if you select levels and leave the values 'as is' nothing gets recorded. You must change a value and change it back again in order for it to be saved.
Hope this helps.

Thanks everybody for the suggestions, I am just going to try and be a bit more logical about my experimenting and write things down that are a success, as they happen, then create an action to replicate what I've just done.
