Hi, Guys,
I don't have a digital camera (still struggling with Canon F1N) and I would like to know is there a relatively cheap compact that can get close to fill the whole frame with something the size of 5p coin?

I have no experience whatsoever with digital cameras, so I have not preference as regards pixels or make. As regards the budget, say, £250. Much above that and I would opt for a DSLR and pay £600 - £800, but I don't know much about them either. Are close up lenses, extension tubes etc. available for digital cameras?

yeah for sure. well i bought a fuji 5700 which u can now get for about £100 if you look online. does macro to 1 cm.
digital slrs sky is the limit, you can get macro lenses extension tubes very easily.
do you have any macro lens's or extenstion tubes for your canon? if so they might be transferable to a canon digital slr? dont quote me on that tho. canon is not my brand of choice. nothing against them before the brand wars start. but i chose my nikon d80. what are u looking to take photos of? from how far away etc?

A second hand G6 would take some beating.

I have extension tubes and bellows. Tubes are in M42 thread, but I have a CanonFD adapter for the bellows, but only one, so I can fit the bellows on a Canon, but must use M42 lens at the taking end. That has not been a problem as my favourite close up lens was 35mm Zeiss Flectogon until its apperture stuck and I cannot get instructions to dismantle and clean it, otherwise it would be OK.
Isn't FD mount a bit old for the latest digital SLRs?
Thanks for the advice, I will look at the spec. of Fuji 5700.

That is a very impressive shot, but I suspect that I would need to be able to get closer. Say, a postage stamp to fill the whole frame.

the 5700 has been upgraded now to the 5800. i have no expierence of this new version but u can get it for the same price as the 5700 so that might be worth a look. for the digital slr i wud ask in the canon forum. someone will know and will be able to inform u much better than i can.

that certainly can be done on a G6 or a G3
You can actually photograph the front surface of the lens.

I shot this on the S3, (and you can do the same on any G or S series Canon)
you can get closer than this, but this is a self portrait so I couldnt, uh, see to get any closer 
This is in Super Macro where you can shoot as close as the lens itself, but bear in mind 1) you cannot zoom in SuperMacro 2) you may have light problems getting that close as you are blocking it all.
