Sigma 30mm 1.4 Lens
      #649271 - 29/04/2008 11:54

Hello all

Has anyone used the Sigma 30mm 1.4 lens on a pentax digital body?
I am thinking of purchasing this lens, but would like to know if I will be able to see an improvement in image quality over my 18-55 kit lens.
I dont print larger than 10x8 and use a Pentax DL.

Regards

Rick

Hello, I hope that yu don't mind a Canon user butting in...

I use one with my Canon and I'm very happy with it. I can't be sure of this but I think the odds are that you'll see an improvement over your kit lens and in addition you'll have f1.4 available to you for limited DOF and low light use.

I think that it's a very nice lens and that you'll enjoy using it.

It's a small sensor only lens so you may wish to consider an alternative FF compatible lens of the same sort of range, just in case Pentax and you go FF in the future. Sigma do a 28mm f1.8, but is a bigger thing and there's no HSM.

I would go for the SMC Pentax-FA 43mm Limited lens, which is compact, beautifully made and a superb performer, way above the class of the independents IMO.

I actually picked up one from Amazon for a modest £254, which is rather better than the usual price of £399.....

Or how about a 50mm f/1.7? The manual ones can be had VERY cheaply (<£30) and the results on my K10D are excellent. This would be a cheap way to see if you like using a fast prime and what you would gain in image quality before you stump up for the 30/1.4 or 43/1.9.

Just a thought!

And a very good thought too. All the Pentax standard lenses are superb and well worth using on the DSLRs. Which is why they are sometimes reaching silly prices on eBay.

The 50mm f1.7 autofocus is also not expensive as a s/h lens. Try Ffordes.

Hmmm,
I am waiting to get my hands on the K/M42 adapter I have ordered from LCE so that I can try my SMC 50mm, 135mm and 200mm Takumars on my K10D. I am looking forward to it, as the results on my S3 are superb, except that I will now have to get a wide angle lens to give me something in the region of 45-50 mm ish on the K10D. Oh dear, more money.

Steve

You could try the Pentax SMC-FA 50mm F1.4, which is a cracker, I managed to get hold of one, brand new for £149 a could of weeks ago, sharp is not the word with this lens, it could cut steel its so sharp.
Although it is designed for film, it works wonders with my K10D.

In case you are wondering I got mine from SRS Microsystems, and they have a few left (not for long after this thread i will guess)

Thanks for all the advice.

I have several SMC maual lenses that I purchased with my Pentax MX 25 years ago. They produce good results on the DL, but unfortunately with a 1.5x magnification, no autofocus and stop down metering.

I thought the 30mm Sigma might be usefull as it`s focal length is near to the old 50mm standard lens that we used to all use with film cameras.

I also looked at the SRS web site, and noticed a Pentax 35mm F2 AL lens. This would be close to 50mm on my DL,any advice on this lens?

Regards

Rick

I recently bought the Samsung equivalent and have been using on my MX and ME cameras - i.e. full frame film!

It is a very good lens, I would say optically better (although not as well made) than the legendary K 35mm f3.5 which I also have.

What I most like about it is its ability to inject some micro contrast and detail into scenes shot in typical UK full bore gloom, situations where other of my pieces of Pentax glassware roll over and die.

I have also tried it, using an adapter, on my Canon 20D, when testing shows that the definition does improve on stopping down, so it isn't a miracle lens, but very highly recommended indeed. I suspect that it would blow the socks off the standard zoom.

Thanks for the advice Wheelu.

I `ve just bought the 35mm F2 AL and it is indeed a very nice performer.Colours are rendered more realistically than the kit lens, and edge definition is in a different league.

It is also as sharp at f2 as the kit lens is stopped down.
