In the manual for my Nikon SB-800 speedlight, it says that using the diffuser while bouncing will reduce shadows even more than bouncing without, but on all the test shots I've taken so far, using the diffuser while bouncing creates more of a shadow behind the subject than bouncing without. Is that normal? Or do they mean it will reduce more shadows on the actual subject's face, rather than behind them on the wall?
Also, I've found that bouncing slightly forward creates more of a shadow behind them, rather than bouncing straight up. But they recommend you bounce slightly foward in the manual.
Should I just not listen to manuals and do what I think it best? lol.

Take the same shot several times with different positions and make a note of what you did, then see what is best.
Have a look at these: www.bbjimports.com

I've just looked on ebay at the sto-fen ones, but they're just square like the one I got with my speedlight. I might have to get a better one to use for direct flash at the wedding, incase I can't bounce it. I don't even know whether to risk bouncing at the wedding. I know I can try it and look at the image on the camera, but you can't really tell what it's like properly untill you see it on the computer screen.

Coz, be a little wary of bouncing - if possible, check out the venue to make sure the ceiling's white enough to give decent colour reproduction - some can be a little smoke stained and you don't want a tobacco effect on all the shots! Again, take a mate or 2 to see what sort of results you get using a few different angles of bounce.
