My old Mamiya 330f seems to have developed a shutter release problem. I was using it tripod mounted this afternoon and operating the shutter with a cable release, when I pressed the release button and nothing happened! I removed the lens and operated the shutter a few times using the levers and that worked fine, so I put it back on the body but it still wouldn't work. I unloaded the film, closed the back, wound it on and fired the shutter a few times and it worked fine, but as soon as I loaded another film it locked up again. I've never had this problem before, is it something really obvious I'm missing? The front shutter release button sticks in a little sometimes, but it's easy to free. tia.

I've sometimes had a problem with my C330f. When I half-press the shutter, take my finger off the release and then press it again to take the picture, the shutter will not release. You say the front release sticks in sometimes. It may be that there is some corrosion or crud in the release mechanism. Maybe a judicious squirt of WD40 might free things up a bit. Maybe it's something to do with the film transport mechanism, especially as it only seems to happen with film loaded. It might be worth sacrificing a roll of film to see if the chrome 'roller wheel' in the top film chamber is turning freely. Try posting this on the APUG site as well. I know Graham Patterson (of the Mamiya TLR website) is a regular contributor on this site and he might be able to shed some light on this.

Thanks for the replies, I think it may be service time too. I know its foam needs replacing anyway, it doesn't leak but it is squidgy. When I load a film it seems to wind on as it should and doesn't seem to slip, but it's odd it works fine with no film in. Might try the WD40 and see how it goes.

It's quite an easy job. I did mine last year. I ordered a foam kit from some geezer in the States.

Go for it! I had similar concerns, but his foam kit has good instructions and there is a website with downloadable instructions for specific cameras (C330f included). The big advantage with the Mamiya is that it has a removable back which makes things easier.

If I can get the damn thing working again I might do, but if I have to get it serviced I may as well leave it to someone who knows what they're doing.

Your post reads that you were using a cable release when it stuck. Does it stick without the cable release? If not it may be a kink in the cable.

It sticks whether I use the cable release or not, a kink in the cable was my first thought too, I've had that problem before but it still wouldn't work with the release completely straight. I'm going to try running some backing paper through it and see if that helps any.

Never ever use a liquid lubricant on a camera -ANYWHERE. It will creep along and get to all the places it should never be and that is ANYWHERE!
Gona cost you, but a service is probably needed, these cameras are at least 15 yrs old and I bet it has never had one before.

I've been holding off suggesting this, because it wouldn't explain the difference with respect to having a film in the camera or not, but just for sake of ticking all the boxes before you shell out for a professional service - it's not a question of forgetting to turn the lens lock knob to the 'lock' position, is it?

Cheers Huw but I checked that too. Unlocking it and taking it off and replacing it several times, made no difference. I'm wondering if it's some sort of transport problem as it works fine without film. I could probably pick up another body for a similar price to a service but if I get it serviced at least I know it'll be good for a few more years yet.

Ran some backing paper through it last night and it worked fine, so I tried a roll of HP5, fired off a couple of frames and it seemed to go ok, so it was either something obvious I missed, though I tried everything I could think of, or all the playing about and firing it filmless must have freed up whatever was stuck. I'll keep an eye on it and see how it goes, thanks for all the help.
