My Panasonic FZ7 doesn't offer RAW as an option but instead has a TIFF option. Now I know this means Tagged Image File Format and that it embeds a thumbnail for each image but is there much advantage in selecting TIFF instead of the highest JPEG setting? I only have a 1GB memory card and it soon fills up when set to TIFF so I never use it,but am I missing out on anything?

TIFF is lossless - like RAW but unlike JPEG - and maybe you will get more than 8 bit depth as well, so if you intend to do anything sophisticated in the way of post processing it may well be worth trying.
As you say, TIFF files are big - bigger than RAW because of the storage of non-significant data e.g. the low 4 bits in each pixel when the sensor resolution is 12 bit, also the fact that TIFF files are (usually) uncompressed whereas RAW files generally have lossless compression applied. The large file size may result in a reduction in burst rate or depth; for some applications this may be a crucial limitation.

Thanks for that bee. I never use more than single shot so burst rate isn't an issue and I rarely print out, yet, but if I had an image in mind for printing I'd be better off shooting in TIFF? I have a photo that i took in B/W on JPEG setting and I hope to have that printed to about 10 x 8 to go alongside the one I printed at college from film

I would guess that in a camera like this that it will be 8-bit TIFF with LZW compression.

That was more for beejaybee than you. Just consider TIFF to be better quality than JPEG and more resistant to image degradation when you start to post-process them.

Well, I just took 3 pics with the 3 settings, and I cant see the difference even when viewed on the PC, apart from file size! 17MB for a pic that looks the same as a 1MB Jpeg!

That is not the issue. I would not expect them to look very different. If, however, you carry out edits on the jpeg and save it, the file will be re-compressed and some information will be dumped, degrading the image slightly for the next time you open it. If you do this wath a TIF, there is no loss of information. The more times you open and resave the jpeg, the more the image will degrade.
You could take all of your images as jpeg to save room on the card, then after downloading, save them as a TIF file. This will preserve the data that has only been compressed once, so little harm will have been done.
The other advantage of this is that you can treat the first tif as a digital negative, to go back to if you muck up the editing. Save the edited tiff to a new filename to preserve the original, or use the jpeg as a master file, but do not save it as a jpeg again.

Hmmm thats an idea. Save as TIF and I should still be able to upload to photobucket and D A which will convert to jpg i'd imagine.

Its always wise to save in the best format available (i.e. the one that preserves the most data) in this case TIFF, for reasons already explained.
The price of memory is falling, is buying a larger memory card an option?

Not at the moment no. I also need a spare battery cos its annoying when it dies while I'm out-equivalent to running out of film. I'll just stick with jpeg for now, after all i don't print out or enter comps, tho i'd like to in the future. Our money goes on the kids first.

Hi,
I realise that money can be very tight, but for what its worth 7dayshop'dot'com have 2GB SD cards starting at £4.99 each, with branded cards for just a little more. They also seem to be v.good/cheap for compatible (ie not oem) batteries, though I didn't look to see if there is one for your camera.
Small items are vat-free, and only 1 postage charge no matter how many parcels they send from 1 order (they break up the order to stay below the VAT limit if necessary).
