Dodgy SD Card
      #622969 - 06/03/2008 19:38

I have a 1Gb SD card that has started to come up with errors - card full after only a couple of frames. I can get software that claims to be able to sort this type of problem, but with the price of cards today is it better to just cut it in two and chuck it? Opinions welcomed.

Is it a Kingston? hehe.

With the price of SD cards these days, the cheapest solution might be to just toss it and get a new card. I sell the Sandisk Ultra II class 2 1GB stuff for $14.98 where I work, as a measure of quality, I'd recommend spending about that or more on a card.

Have you tried formatting the card in the camera?

Not sure if this will sort it out. but you never know.

Ah yes. Now I remember. I was shooting with a Nikon hte other day and I had the same problem. A coworker suggested I format, but I didn't get around to it. Maybe that would be the best solution...before buying another card, that is.

Does the card have a Recycle Bin? Rather annoyingly, my MemoryStick M2 in my 'phone uses one which means that deleted files still occupy storage space.

Not a function of the card, it will be a function of the OS.

I use a utility called "Flash Memory Toolkit" which I have had for ome time. Sorts out problems with my SD cards.
Try a Google for it.

While this is true, I just have to be a smart-alec and point out that in all digital media, nothing is ever actually deleted, it's just overwritten.

So really, when your 4Gb card fills up and you delete it all, you still have 4Gb worth of data on the card, it's just that all of the sectors have been marked as free space. This is the same for all non-volatile media such as Memory cards, floppy disks and Hard Drives. Only a format actually deletes data and sets all the bits to null.

You probably all already know, that's how data recovery works.

THanks for that, however, it is not as referred to as a recycle bin, unless the Operating System (beit a camera's or laptop's) have the ability built in, images cannot be recovered. That was the point.

Even though the data is not physically removed, it cannot always be recovered either, Formatting and overwritting with 0s is the only surefire way of actually removing data from a CF card.

Nick, was this card en Ebay purchase by any chance? There is a guide written in Ebay detailing the extent of dud, fake and fraudulent cards being sold on the site. It makes interesting reading, so long as you've not bought one of the cards being described...

That's what I was wondering - suggests it's a common scam to take a 128K card say and 'adjust' its properties to when in the camera it tells you it's a much larger card. It's not of course so once it has a few images on it it's full....

When I buy cards on ebay I always copy some larger files on them to check they hold what they say they will....
