Difficult one to answer.

Not until something with everything that the D3 has to offer, but with the price of the D300 is released.

If Moores law is roughly true for cameras as well as computers that should be in around 4 years.

Fingers crossed.

I just did, from an EOS400D to a 35mm EOS 3...
40MP scans from my Dimage Scan Elite 5400...
that'll do nicely thank you.

I'd more likely to do "downgrade" than upgrade...

Hmm...

I ended up plumping for within 5 years as I suspect within that time period there is likely to be some technical advance that's really worth having... or my D30/20D will die.

OTOH if I win the lottery I'm getting a D3...

I've only just gone digital with a 40D and I have no intention of upgrading. It meets my requirements as it is and it doesn't really matter what other cameras do. Will I get 20 years out of it though.

I went for within 3 years, but like others that really depends upon what products come next. There is currently nothing available that I'd realistically want to swap my 5D for and any eventual replacement will have to be a major step forwards to be worth an upgrade.

Well I've only had my 6MP Panasonic for a while but i'd love to upgrade my Canon film camera but not till the prices are low enough for me to afford one,but i fear that by then the build quality will be even worse than things are now!

I said within 5 years, as I took 'upgrade' in its widest sense. I'll be buying other (almost certainly film) cameras in the much shorter term (for fun) which aren't 'better' as such. In 5 years time I might be tempted to go for a new digibox - none of my non mechanical cameras have lasted much more than that.

Well I've said 'within 1 yr' but really mean that I'll add a DSR to the collection in that time period, hopefully in March. I am not considering an upgrade as such, rather a different tool. Once I've bought, unless I break it, I do not intend to 'upgrade' - rather use it until it falls apart.

I will upgrade when I make a foolish impulse buy and the retailer doessn't fail to deliver by my required date.
I learnt a long time ago to always make time of delivery an essential condition of orders to supply goods which are in short supply (time of essence). I have found it as useful to cancel foolish impulses as it was to put pressure on deliveries. Thank goodness that my chosen supplier could not supply a D3 within the month from my order in December.
My D200 is good; it is better than I need; I do not need a D3 or D300. Now that both cameras are available I must remain disciplined and not upgrade until Nikon produce an equivalent to the Canon EOS 5D at a sensible price and weight.
For the time being I am safe because all spare cash accept an emergancy fund is tied up in 3,6, and 12 month investmants, but by March temptation will be rearing its head.

I did this just last week when I upgrade my Minolta Dynax 7d to the Sony A700.

I am keeping the 7d as a second camera, did think about getting a second A700 and passing on the 7d, but I had enough trouble trying to get the first one.

I ticked 1 year as I'm thinking of upgrading my EOS5 to a 3 but I don't think that's go much to do with "more resolution, live view or any of the other new features that are coming out"

I'd just like better AF and considering I'd need to get a 1D (or 5DmkII) to get the same AF with digital a £100 second hand EOS3 seems pretty reasonable

This week's poll (slightly late - sorry) is asking 'When will you next upgrade your camera?'. With all this new kit around you might be tempted to head for more resolution, live view or any of the other new features that are coming out. You might, however, be quite happy with what you have got.

Make for the home page to let us know what you think.

Thanks

damien

I said within 1 year as I will probably look at moving to full frame (5D/6D?)....but then again!

I've just got a nice new Sigma SD14, so I'd only consider an upgrade if someone happened to bring out something with the handling of a Minolta XD7 with a full frame Foveon sensor.

Given the improvements between the OM1/2 and OM3/4, I could be tempted when Olympus release an OM5 or OM6. Otherwise, I might consider a new LF camera if I find I'm contrained by the length of the bellows on my existing camera.

Which means, unless a camera breaks down, I don't envisage getting another.

I'm more or less with you Will.

There's nothing available that significantly adds to what I already have - certainly not enough to cause be to part with lots of money !

OTH if either of the following was to become available I might be tempted.

Either infallibly accurate autofocus that worked at 1:1 magnification without hunting and allowed me to choose precisely (and I mean precisely) the exact part of the photo that I wanted to use as the focus point. It must also work instantaneously.

Or a hinged live view screen that could be split so that it showed the whole picture area and also a very highly magnified section of the image. The magnified section must be a section that I choose and I must have the means of choosing the section from anywhere in the picture area. Again the screen resolution must be such that I can be 100% sure of the accuracy of focus.
I'd also like an accurate and easily viewable representation of the true depth of field. I don't mean the dark screen, barely visible, stuff that we get with the traditional DoF Preview - but something really useful (and of course adjustable).

Too much to ask? Maybe but, for me, things that might make me think about a new camera.

MickLL

I said i wouldn't upgrade my DSLR, but OTOH I have been toying with the idea of selling my Mamiya Press stuff and my MPP to buy a good ten-eight field camera. Would probably sell my Arca ten-eight monorail as well. But then the Arca isn't heavy and has better movements than most field cameras. Is this going OT? Or even OTT

As soon as my order for a D3 reaches the top of the list - hopefully March - can't wait!! If you want a reader to provide pictures using it, do let me know - I shoot concerts very seriously which is a perfect opportunity to test out it's low light / high ISO claims. Neil
