WHEN WILL YOU UPGRADE? - NEW POLL
      #606929 - 06/02/2008 07:55

This week's poll (slightly late - sorry) is asking 'When will you next upgrade your camera?'. With all this new kit around you might be tempted to head for more resolution, live view or any of the other new features that are coming out. You might, however, be quite happy with what you have got.

Make for the home page to let us know what you think.

Thanks

damien

No Intension? Is this some sort of internal struggle whether to switch to Nikon (you know it makes sense) or stay with your existing vendor?

I've really no idea. When I next see some need to I suppose. Having just gone Leica, that may be some time.

Hmmmm. Dunno. I've no current intention of upgrading - nor any need to. That doesn't mean I've no intention of ever upgrading, simply that for now, I can't even envisage the timetable. I upgraded my first DSLR after 3 years, but that was for features I had wanted right from the start. There aren't many things I could imagine upgrading for right now, so it's likely to be when my existing camera has had a lot more hammer than now - more replacement than an upgrade.

I'm not sure either. I have been very tempted by the D300 but I don't have the money and my D200 is a great camera. I'll probably upgrade sometime in the next three years, however.

I'd like to replace my Eos1v to maybe a 1v, or an Eos3, probably sometime in the next few months. I don't intend replacing my digital body any time soon.

I'll upgrade (from film to digital!) if I can find a new job before my redundancy pay runs out - and if I can get in before the missus wants to upgrade carpets, curtains etc.!

I've been thinking about upgrading my ageing Russian Zenit B and the hand held lightmeter for some time now. It's starting to show its age.
I've got my eye on a Pentax Spotmatic on E-Bay. that should see me ok for another thirty years or so.
I hear there is some new technology called "digital" rearing its head. It'll be a flash in the pan fad if you ask me. Nothing will replace Kodachrome 25 transparency film.

If I suddenly found a big gold nugget, I'd follow the advice that's often given here - I'd keep my existing camera (Samsung GX-10 twin lens kit) and spend the money on a wide-angle lens; either the Sigma 10-20mm or the Samsung 12-24mm. I would also love to have a good A3 printer as, currently, I'm limited to A4. So I've said that I've no intention of upgrading my camera.

Having just bought my Canon 5D, I can't see myself upgrading any time soon 5++ years, possibly when sensor technology improves, eg full frame 12+ MP Foveon that actualy works .

I have recently added to, rather than, perhaps, upgraded. I had no intention of doing this - until the reviews on the D3 came out. The D3 has taken photography to new horizons. Its low light capability is unbelievable. I have taken photographs at ISO 25,600 and they are remarkable. Selling off underused Leica and XPan gear not only funded it and the new 24-70/2.8 but left plenty in reserve.

So,I have added FX to DX, which I still love with the D2X. But more importantly, I have added to my photographic capabilities in a way I had never envisaged. As Bjorn Rorslett has said, we are not talking about 'available light' but 'available darkness'.

I voted "won't upgrade" because I don't think I will within 5 years. OTOH if the damn thing breaks I'll replace it, in which case most likely with an "upgraded" model.

The only thing that would make me consider upgrading seriously is if a camera came out with hugely better low noise /high ISO performance than my EOS 5D. Nothing wrong with the 5D for normal photography but it's noisy for astrophotography.

I'd like built-in sensor cleaning and autofocus capability out to f/8 but I'm not going to shell out loadsadosh just to get those features.

I must admit that for the first time in many a long photographic year, I've never felt less inclined to upgrade such is my contentment with my current and now increasingly "out of date" Canon EOS10D camera. It does exactly what it says on the tin and fulfills most if not all of my photographic needs, so why upgrade? Well the "need" to "upgrade" at all raises certain interesting questions like "what are people's motivations for upgrading"? For me, it would be because a piece of kit has emerged that represents a "significant" moving forward of the capability and standards of picture taking. To this end I see very little of major "significance" emerging since the advent of the digital age and to my mind most of the recent advances have simply been "window dressing" and tweaking of existing standards.

Clive has referred to the new Nikon D3's low light capabilities and he presents a convincing case for it's inclusion in the "significant" new innovations list. It's price however, ensures that it will remain an "exclusive" if "significant" innovation and unless or until it's standards are widely adopted by other camera makers I feel it will remain thus.

So will I "upgrade"? Well I put down "within 3 years" and only because I have faith that the "boffins" are working away even as we speak at something new right now which will mark a "significant" moving forward of picture taking ability. If not, then I guess we're in for another three years of "window dressing".

I have just counted the contents of my camera shelf and it contains 6 Canons and one Bronica that I bought over about 35 years, plus one Datematic and a Nikkormat that I inherited. Of course there is also the E510 I actually use (not to mention the 500 I gave away to my daughter) That makes an average of one camera every 4/5 years. There was a brief flurry at the beginning of digital era when I was chasing features but the E510 is so good that I expect it will last the usual 5 years before I move it up to that shelf.

I ticked never
but then again I'm not good at keeping New Year Resolutions...
The only upgrade I'm going for is an eyetest...which I really should do annually..may even improve my pictures that way..and it's fairly cheap...
