Hi all,
Just wanted to say Hi... i'm a complete amateur at photography, and still trying to get my head around all the different terminology. I don't even know what difference changing ISO ratings do lol.
So... to get me screaming into the DC era, and start learning... i've just ordered an FZ18. Looked at plenty of reviews, and at many different mags (including this one)... and decided that it was the camera for me.
Just watched the youtube electronic review from here, and now just can't wait to start learning by doing. I do remember however, going into the Panasonic Shop about 3 months ago asking about this camera, and they said i was mistaken as there was no such camera ever being made. When i told them it was on the panasonic website... they said i must have gone on the Korean website by mistake! Bloody cheek.
Anyway, do you reckon i;ve made a good decision for a first time camera? Please say yes haha... don't to have wasted £300

Well, the reviews think you've made a good choice although £300 is a top price.

Whatever the cost you will stil have an excellent camera. I've got the FZ8 and can't praise it highly enough. As much as I like Panasonic stuff, their shops are a total waste of time. When I bought my FZ8 from an online retailer, my local Panasonic Store hadn't heard of it. Also they were selling the previous model, the FZ7, for more than I paid for the FZ8!

The FZ18 should give you enough to work with to gain some skills and is capable of some fantastic shots. I found it very easy to use and feel it makes an ideal camera for either a beginner such as yourself or someone who would take advantage of the Raw capabilities/manual control etc. Also, the Intelligent Auto mode is perfect for when you're either feeling a bit lazy or not sure of what settings to use... let us know how you get on!

Thanks for the replies guys. Yes £300 is a lot, but most retail shops are selling at £330... and almost all of them only stocked black (i wanted silver). Anyway... i'm not bothered about that bit. Would be more annoyed if i payed £300 and had a crap camera. Sounds like i've made a good choice then.
Just can't wait to get it now. :D

.... hmm..... so there seem to be a few first time user buying the FZ18. Perhaps we should document their progress in a seperate 'New-To-Photography Amateur Panasonic FZ18 Buyer Chat'?
Just a thought......

To further the cause, I'm the same - I just received my FZ18 and intend to learn (a lot) through use. I'll be looking around for any hints and tips too so it would be interesting to benefit from any other newbies' learning curves.
Can't wait to get out with it!

As of yet there may not be much guidance about for the FZ18, try looking for info regarding the FZ7 & FZ8. They are operationally very similar to the FZ18.
