Chemical availability
      #549688 - 04/10/2007 11:05

Hello,

I just tried finding some darkroom chemicals (neg & print)in the shops not having used my darkroom kit for a few years. No one has any, they all looked at me a bit funny when I asked (well they do that anyway). Where is the best place to get hold of some ? I was told it was only available online now.

It is getting much harder to find chemicals in stores. My local branch of Jacobs keeps a small stock mono processing items. Other than that I get my stuff online from either Silverprint or Retro Photographic.

There is no shortage on line, but otherwise you might need to go to more pro oriented shops like Calumet.

Thanks guys, I'll probably order some online. I must admit that I was a bit disappointed by the response I got in some shops when I asked.

I use a company called 'First call' based in Taunton. they have a really comprehensive range and the prices are about average and in sone cases lower than most

Yeah, they look at me as if I've walked into the wrong shop. Despite this, I usually get chemistry through my local Jessops (if it's listed at www.jessops.com) as it's no more expensive once you've taken postage into account. I also buy their own fixer, which is just as good as the branded stuff.

At least by ordering it they know someone wants the stuff.

with Jessops you can pre-order and they'll get it into your local shop for you, and they're not silly money, especially once you have factored in delivery charges.

Our Jessops seem to have suddenly started stocking paper and chemicals again, albeit at rather steep prices.
