anyone got an opinion on the pending on the pending Lumix FZ18? How do you think it will perform for example against a semi pro ( in particular D100 as this is now old in digital terms) DSLR?
After 4 months of not even wanting to pick my camera up I'm looking for something to inspire me, and yeah I know it's not the gear blah blah blah, but I want something light and small to just take out with me 'in case...'
After in AP I'm taken with the spec.
Damien if you are looking in is there any intention to run tests & comparisons on the this camera mentioned last week in the news and views?

Tanya babe.............................no inspiration for 4 months! What's going on! This is a tragedy for one so talented! Listen, if getting this camera gets you back on track then get it if that is what it takes...............................the important thing is to get you inspired again regardless of what it takes to do that! If a new camera does it then go for it I say!

Thanks David, hadn't seen that!
Yeah Will has been a long time hasn't it, may even be longer but one thing is for sure I've never had a lull this long before!
I've not long bought th 18-200mm but there still isn't that get up and go for taking my camera out as I once had!
It's difficult as I really would like a compact but as the devil pointed out in our place it's hard going back to lcd rather than viewfinder and shutter lag was one of the reasons I got a DSLR.
However if picture quality equalled or surpassed my current camera then I think I could live with those things!

A mate has just bought a Fuji 9600 after looking around for a camera. His other choice would have been a Lumix (latest one I think) but apparently noise is an issue at higher ISO's and the zoom doesn't go down to wide-angle, starts at around 38mm or something I think instead of 28mm. Had a play with the fuji and it's a nice little camera - not handled a Lumix.

Morning Tanya,
I might check out the Olympus SP 550 UZ which has been out for 4 or 5 months now and when it was announced I had a customer who really wanted one (and pre-paid) so we put the order in .....then it arrived and she was, as you folks say, 'chuffed' ...for one day and then she brought it back because her computer could not open the "raw files" plus the menu was difficult to navigate So she was refunded her money...and, upon my return to work ( 2 days later) I sussed out her "raw file" problem and was willing to spend time with her working on the menu -- which is a stretch and kinda like going swiming with a cement thong -- but she declined the offer because NOWshe didn't like the camera
In the end, we sold it to (either) a Yank or a Brit (who were in town for a week) and didn't hear a word back from them
So what all this (my) previous crap is supposed to mean ...."what ????? are ya nuts

I agree about the Fuji. I got one for my wife as a replacement for her Minolta Z1 which died. It has better resolution 9mp instead of 3.1, but a shorter zoom range 28-300 instead of 38-380 but this is not really a bad point.

We'll be reviewing the FZ18 in November's issue of WDC so stay tuned. I will say that first impressions are good though, having had a play with it.
