The canon EF-S 55-250 is a cracking lense for the price, I have one and had some really good sharp images of it, Shop around I paid £130 for a brand new one.

I would look for a good second hand canon G9 or similar, it has full point and shoot capabilities but can do a lot more in the TV, AV and Manual modes, lithium battery lasts well and picture quality...
