F50/d50

Sorry, old film user getting confused!

So to clarify, its a D50 you have, not the F50? Still don't know the answer to your query though, sorry.
I wonder if its because its quite an old lens, from film days, and there is some communication issue. I have a few old Nikon lenses and I think we've a D50 somewhere so I might give it a try.
