Canon G12 lens issues

Just ordered the G12 on line Friday. Did my homewerk completely. Then I ordered the Lensmate adapter so as to add a filter to save the lens from scratches. Now after reading numerous forums, I find many g12 owners are finding scratches on their lenses. One consensus is the auto lens retractor is causing the problem
Did I make a mistake buying this camera ?
Nikon P7100 has nothing on google under, "scratched lens issues".

The G series has been around a long time so I find it hard to believe that there is an issue of this type. But the G12 is a good camera and takes really good pictures

I also bought a G12 last week from a review site and luckily I found this thread. @wave -- can you advice me on how to take care of it? Proper handling and such? I dont want it to go to waste
