I do understand in what you are saying, but the price got me. If my daughter really takes to photography i will then buy here a lot better camera but i don't to spend a lot of money for something just to sit in a cupboard after a couple of weeks.

first camera
I use a Panasonic DMC-fx10 and it is brilliant, easy to use very good quailty pictures and it has a rechargeable battery which i believe is much better and cheaper than AA batteries.

If its for a child though i'd rate the most important factors in this order:
1. Looks/styling
2. Ease of Use
3. Image Quality
Kids generally don't pixel peep and would struggle to see the difference between the results from most cameras, but want it to look good and be easy to use. I hope she's happy with her Casio. Its pink, so that's a bonus if the girls I know are anything to go by!
