This week's poll is asking where you will buy your next camera - or lens. Do you prefer the comfort of a High Street store, the security of a favourite specialist's mail order service or are you happy to buy high value unseen on the web? Some head overseas too. What will you do? Head to the home to let us know. Thanks - and sorry this is late. damien |

Quote: [pedant mode] I've already told you I'm not buying another camera last week..or was it before then ...[/pedant mode]Ah I read your post and it includes lenses...well that's different then. Sometime in the future I'll buy a new lens..possibly...but the source would have to be trusted [by me or even recommended by others e.g., this forum] and it would have to be at the right price....so I don't really know...probably on-line..hopefully if I've had chance to look in a shop..but definitely not abroad

Local store with friendly faces for me...and armed with AP to make sure I get a fair price. Haggling is way more fun than googling
I want to say my local shop, but then the price differential on a D300 and the 70-200 AF-S f:2.8 is just too great for me to be able to give them the business. I will give them every opportunity to come within a reasonable range, but as the purchase would be stretching me to the limit I'll need every penny I can get (right down to pay nowt for a year pay plans) |
If its a camera then probably at a local store....as long as the difference between the store price and the web price isn't too extreme. As for lenses, probably abroad. |
I would like to say 'At my local store' but they are as rare as hen's teeth around here. I don't like to buy things unseen so I tend to have a look at equipment that I have in mind when I'm about elsewhere before I make my mind up. I have answered 'Via mail order from an advert'. That way a local independant store (albeit not local to me) will get my business. I've used several from the back of AP and had good service every time. |
Where's the "at Focus" option?
I have said Local Store, but I am lucky in that I have found a local store with excellent service and which is willing to price match to the internet, otherwise I would probably have checked the On Line option. |
Online for me or maybe a phone call to place an order. I do my research online and read AP and gather enough information to make my decision. I know what I want so price is the determing factor. I wouldn't be happy spending a large sum with a company from abroad, especially the far east. |
Hopefully at a local store, although I've no plans to upgrade for a while. We are lucky to have a few good uns not too far away. Second hand gear tends to be by mail order though (Ffordes, MXV, et al). |
I want a Nikon D200 and the only way i can afford one is second hand online. Although I do worry that buying sight unseen might land me a duffer.
I really wanted to say "At my local store" and I'd even be willing to pay a small premium over web prices to do so, but it reality I'd probably have to get the shop to order the goods and invariably I'd have to pay up-front. That's no better than mail-order, so why would I wait ages for something I can get considerably cheaper online with next day delivery? |
My "local" store is a 3 hour round trip away, so I'll admit that most stuff is bought mail order (usually through the web site but from a reputable camera shop rather than an internet specialist). |
It'll be either the local store(s) with exception of Jessies and online depending whether the items I am after are available in the store at time... It'll be LCE first then Jacobs failing that it'll be online. |
Normally I buy locally, but if/when I replace my K100D or get any new K-mount lenses I'll almost certainly order from SRS in Watford (used to be my local store, and they are top dogs for Pentax). However, I voted 'abroad' as my next camera will likely be a Zero from HK, or something old and fun I can find in Japan in May.
Since my next purchase is probably a second hand D200, I'll probably go to Aperture or Jacobs. |
I can't guarantee my next purchase will be from my local store, especially if go to Focus, but it's a high probability considering the number of items I've purchased from them over the years...
Hopefully from a local shop. IF such things still exist when the consumer FF Nikon DSLR hits the market at a price I'm prepared to pay! |
Wharehouse Express, probably the Sigma 10-20 zoom, probably within the next few weeks. Have bought from them several times before, always good service. Hopefully, they will soon be my 'Local Store' as well.

I've just spent the last of my budget for photographic gear. A few minutes ago I ordered a monopod from Morris Photographic and a 2x converter from 7dayshop. That should be me for the next few years. |

I went with an on-line store as that's where a bought my 5d. Actually it was on ebay from the Canon refurbishment store January last year. Paid under £1300 which was a good 15% lower than anywhere else at the time and included a years Canon UK warranty. Most of my other purchases are made on-line, as not only is the gear I want in stock and usually at a better price but, by buying on-line you actually enjoy better protection and consumer rights than you do using a local shop. |
Quote: Could you please explain that statement further Paul? I was under the impression that you had the same rights; or probably better at a local shop, as you could have a face-to-face discussion if a problem arose.
I voted "In person at a camera shop", there is no option "Local Camera shop". Whether I buy in the UK or abroad will largely depend on where I am at the time and whether they have what I want in stock. I have taken the initiative and turned the title down from CAPS to lower case. |
Along with many others I'd like to have voted "in person at a camera shop" but the reality is on the internet! It would be nice to support the local retailer but the often huge price difference does matter. Both camera shops here in Grantham have now closed so the only place we can buy cameras is Argos or travel to Nottingham where there are still Jessies, Jacobs and several smaller shops to choose from. |

Quote:Quote: Not at all. If you buy an item from a shop on impulse and then decide it was a mistake or find your being made redundant the next day etc (rather than say the items are faulty) the shop doesn't have to take it back, offer a refund or credit note or indeed exchange it for something else. Although it might offer one of the above as a gesture of goodwill. If the goods where faulty you are still only entitled to a refund if the shop cannot replace the item with another similar item or repair it within a reasonable time. If you purchase on-line the law is you can cancel the contract in the first seven days for any reason and the seller has to give you a refund, which is not dependent upon you even returning the goods within that time. Plus of course if you use your credit card you have even more protection as if the supplier refuses you can instruct your card supplier to withdraw the payment until the dispute is settled. |

Funnily enough I tried to go to two independent shops this very afternoon. Both had shut! I was also in Jessops who said they didn't price match any more but then were prepared to offer me a similar price on a lens to that from WE when I asked nicely. Unfortunately, they only had a display product in stock and I preferred one out of a box and not one that had been handled carelessly by the many. They won't get any more in for 4-6 weeks. I would have definitely preferred to buy from Jessops locally but don't want to wait, so it looks like WE again for me. Wille |

I saw a canon 100-400 in jessops for 999.99 I am thinking of buying that on BN PL and I get a lens for a year before I have to pay for it !! I am just trying to convince GF !!! |

Its such a bloody trade off between aperture focal length etc etc ! i still think about a 200mm prime f2.8 and a two times tele but I lose the flexibility of the 100-400, bloody minefield . I did show my GF the 16995 price tag on sigma 200-500 f2.8 and suggested the remortgage paid for it , that fell on deaf ears !!! bloody unreasonable so and so !! |

I am saving from my various photo earnings and will get one, one day!!! I saw the 200-500 when it was first announced but at the time there were not a massive amount of details just looked at the update www.sigmauser.eu/content/view/185/63/ nice to see it closer to production, not quite sure about the green colour - but love the snappy little converter to go with it! But agree slightly out of the price range with an RRP of 1p less that £16k. Some great features must admit I have not seen a lens with a rear 72mm filter before, or one with its own Li-ion battery BP-21 to power the zoom!! Shame it did not come with its own trailer My 1D MkII I bought privately off eBay which was an interesting prospect! Canon outlet can be very good, but you do get idiots who drive the price way up, which is what I happened when I looking for my MkII it ended up with one girl winning on 4 cameras, all she did was ruin it for everyone else! I have bought a number of larger items from 7 Day Shop, several years ago they were a lot cheaper, they then went through a period when they stopped selling Canon, but recently they have restarted but they are definitely not as competitive as they once were. I use the Price Buster Site - www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/ which can be good, especially when it can show you the current offers/discounts available. I also buy a lot from my local independent shop because they offer a great service, are very friendly and I get free tea and coffee, plus I can play with all the goodies!!! Incl lots of nice f2.8 bits - One day...

I could not help myself today, I know Jessops can be very overpriced, but I bought myself a canon 100-400 on buy now pay later!! I am mightily impressed with the lens though, and its free for year !! It is 899.99 in the Norfolk camera centre, advertised in AP but generally it was about the 999.99 I paid for it in all the other adverts ! Almost certainly online, but then I'll have done the research and know what I want so there's no added benefit to going into a bricks and mortar store, unless there's little or no cost difference. I did go into Jessops a few weeks back to get a replacement LCD protection screen for a D80. . . . only to be told they had -11 in the warehouse.

Definitely not A J Purdy who have had my money for over 3 months now and I have nothing to show for it. Been trying to get a refund for over 6 weeks without any joy. Have had to go down the credit card protection route as a last resort so hopefully will get my money back soon. |

I'll spend my money with Frank Foster at Photo Design Studio in Woolacombe. I've bought a fair bit from him over the last 3-4 years - top class & reasonable prices. I've also bought from MXV & Jonathan Harris. But Frank is very honest, sells at fair prices and is very knowledgable. Charlie |

OK - I ordered a lens late December. I was put on hold to check it was in stock which they said it was and that I would receive it within a few days. The money was charged to my credit card straight away. A week came and went - no lens. I called (the first of many phone calls) only to be told the lens was out of stock but it should be in next week. When I asked why I was told it was in stock when I ordered it they couldn't tell me. Anyway another week came and went, another phone call came and went, no lens ever came. On the 4th of Feb I cancelled the order as by that time they couldn't say when I would get my lens. I have still not had my money back. I have made numerous phone calls to them trying to get my money back and have been told a cheque will be send first class today (that was several weeks ago), the refund machine is broken so we can't credit your card but we will send a cheque, we are just waiting on a signature from a Director...but still nothing. I reported the matter to my credit card company who also called them a couple of times yet still they wont refund me. I am having to get the money back from the card company and leave it up to them to make a claim against Purdy's. Hence you can see why I will never ever shop with them again or recommend them to anyone. I may have been unlucky but this is just incredibly bad customer service. |

The simple fact is I cancelled my order on the 4th of February and it is now the 19th of March and I am still waiting for my refund. I have tried to speak to Steve Marley a couple of times but was told he was not available. The matter has since been passed to my credit card company who are dealing with this on my behalf. I will let you know the outcome. |

That sounds very unlike AJ Purdy, I have purchased 4 EOS1D bodies from them over the last few years, (original 1D and 1D mkIIN) and several lenses in the last 10 years ,most over the phone, and several in person and have never had a problem with them. Indeed I have recommended them to many of my professional colleagues and have never heard a bad word about them. I had to wait a couple of weeks for the first EOS1D, as I had pre-ordered it, and was rewarded with one of the first in the UK. |

My credit card company have refunded me. Nothing from Purdy's. Now that I have my money back I will be asking Mr Marley for an explanation why the service from A J Purdy was so poor and why I had to get my refund from the credit card company and not AJP. I'll let you know the response. |

Thanks for that. I'm glad that you got it sorted personally. I too would like to know the reasons behind this and I have sent an email to Steve Marley at AJP which points to your response and with the following text: > It would be good to have your take on this matter too. AJP do have a good > reputation and it would be a shame if this was to tarnish it in any way. I hope you don't mind, but it should hopefully bring a response to you and other buyers at AJP. |

The following is the response I received from AJP this morning, verbatim: == Quote == The 'customer' did not respond to my post on this thread. Note you passed on my email address and again no email was received. Do not have this persons details, what they say they purchased or anything else that would help resolve this. They say in their post they have been waiting over 3 months and we had their money for 6 weeks then say they cancelled their order 4th February so it really does not all add up. The only chargebacks (refunds made by credit card company rather than us) we have had this year are either a) Fraudulant transactions b) transactions which are not data matched which we are then supposed to security verify - and if we cannot verify them we are not supposed to refund them but allow a chargeback. == Unquote == Now, I don't see any post on here from AJP on this thread (Maybe a Mod can confirm this). I am starting to believe AJP on this one as I can't see them allowing their reputation to be tarnished in this way and I would ask MPR123 to either contact Mr. Marley direct or post the full details on here. I can find nothing sinister with the response from AJP and I don't think that I would not consider using them again. MPR123, for your own integrity, let's have the full details. You have a total of 4 posts and they have all been on this thread, are you for real? |

I'd have to admit to having had problems with a couple of Warehouse Express orders lately (or more specifically the failure of CityLink to deliver either of my last two orders next day). I am for real - just been away from the PC for a while. Unfortunately I have recently had a very similar experience with AJ Purdy as mpr123. I ordered a rather expensive lens which AJ Purdy claimed would be with me within 7 to 10 days, they debited my credit card for the full amount and then I heard nothing. When I contacted them 7 days later they could not give me a delivery date for the lens. Despite faxing them, they were poor at getting back to me and after 3 further calls and an exchange of e-mails they still could not quote a delivery time. At this point I cancelled my order and requested they refund my money to my card. They said they would do this but never did. A series of exchanges by e-mails and telephone followed and they gave three seperate assurances and stated dates of card refund. The refund never occured, they finally claimed their refund machine was broken. Daily phoning and e-mailing eventually resulted in a claim that a cheque had been put in the post, first class. With over £2,500 at stake you can imagine I was getting quite concerned. A week later the cheque had not arrived (it never did) so they posted another cheque, this time guaranteed next day delivery. This cheque arrived the next day (thankfully) and took the usual 4 working days to clear before I could then clear the credit card account. I think it is very poor practice to debit credit card accounts for the full amount when they do not have the item in stock, cannot guarantee when the item will be in stock or do not have the capability to refund credit cards promptly. Overall a very bad service and I would NEVER use AJ Purdy again and advise others to be cautious too. I have now returned to Warehouse Express who have always provided me with excellent service, have never debited my credit card card until they physically have the goods to dispatch and all my items have arrived on time the next day delivered by City Link. I made the mistake of using AJ Purdy and will not that mistake again. APJ |

It may be a local shop to me in Nottingham, chain or independant, or a shop local to people in Leeds which I visit often, or internet to a retailer who is a local shop to someone. It will not be a net dealer who only has a net presence (or PO address); they must have a proper physical location. Also it will not be some bloody foreigner not subject to mainland trading standards. I do not see IOM or channel islands any differently to HK or indeed Zimbabwe or Somalia; I wouldn't touch any of 'em with a bargepole. Of course I have not actually seen adverts from businesses in the latter two countries in AP but just mention them to give some idea of the disdain I feel to the other slightly dubious areas of the world with which I class them. |

For MPR123 I received the following message from AJP today: -- Original Message -- From: Steve Marley [mailto:SteveMarley@ajpurdy.co.uk] Sent: 09 April 2008 10:09 To: Bob Turner Subject: RE: Poor/Bad Service? Hi Bob, Have now received an email from this person and been able to trace his paperwork. There was an error at our end - everything points to the lens having been sent out to him but courier records prove it wasn't. We have no record of any of his calls (not saying he didn't call but we have no notes on his paperwork). The post I put with no chargebacks is correct as although he says he has been refunded by MBNA we have not received any chargeback notification from Streamline relating to his order. I have apologised and offered £100 worth of compensation as a gesture of goodwill and can only thank you for pointing this post out to me in the first place. Had I been contacted in the first place or given the details sooner the whole thing could have been resolved the same day. Thanks again. Best regards Steve Marley - Director -- Ends -- AJP are holding up their hand on this one, even though the initial error lies with the courier. |

As posted by Bawbee earlier I can confirm I have received an apology from Steve Marley along with a partial explanation of what went wrong and an offer of compensation. He mentioned that if I had contacted him earlier then this could have been resolved much quicker, even the same day. I had already given AJP many chances to refund me, including the mysterious cheque that never came, and by the time I posted to the forum I had lost all confidence in AJP. I had also signed and returned the claim form to MBNA by then as well and as I had much more confidence that they would resolve the matter I felt it only fair to leave them to complete what I had asked them to do. As far as I concerned the matter is now closed. |
