DID YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY IMPROVE OVER 2007?
|
|
Do you think your photography has got better over the last year? And if so what was it that made the difference? Maybe it was just practice, or maybe you discovered a new technique. Perhaps you are thinking about your picture taking in a different way.
It might be that 2007 was the year you lost your way and you lost focus.( )
Go to the HOME PAGE to let us know which way you went.
Thanks for playing

Now that is a good question! Hmmm, mine certainly developed in new directions, and that can only be to the good, so I've voted 'yes'. But beyond that I'm not sure I'm any better at anything in particular.

I went with not sure. I suppose my understanding of digital has improved, and I've tried new things (like pinhole, both on film and digital), but I'm still getting the same results. I was really pleased with my pictures last year, and this.

I most definitely did improve over the year. I shot some of my best stuff ever in the Lakes in October. This is probably a result of 'seeing' a potential shot more often and having better technique to capture the image and render it how I want it to look when I process it on the computer.

I have voted 'yes' and the reason why I would have to say yes was because I enrolled on the AP Diploma in Photography course. (whether my tutor would agree with me is another matter )

I answered yes, mainly because I've found that the immediacy of digital has let me see results withing seconds. I can then look at the shot, back at the subject and make adjustments - adding to the permanent learning curve that's photography!

Most definitely, getting back to photography as opposed to family snaps only, it's the only New years resolution I have ever kept. I must thank all on this forum, as you have all been responsible getting me thinking about photography, and going out and taking pictures again. Thanks again, wishing you all a Happy 2008 and long may the improvements continue.

No, it didn't. You shame me into a resolution for 2008. I have gone stale; I talk more about photography than doing it. I am already thinking about new projects to stir me into new activity.

No, definitely not I only took about 3 photos I was actually happy with. Can only hope 2008 will be better, For sure, I can't possibly get worse

Re: DID YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY IMPROVE OVER 2007?
|
|
Last January, I joined our local Photographic Club. Over the past year, I have entered competitions and watched and listened to the judges comments good and bad on my work and that of other members.
I am competing this year at 'intermediate' level, which is a bit more forgiving of small mistakes. I am fortunate to now lead in the 'Print' section and I am in the top three in the 'Digital image' and 'Slides' sections. This has been entirely due to a steep learning curve, self critisism and a willingness to accept advice from my piers in the club, far more than any talent!
Next season, I may move up to 'Expert' level and then things will get very tough, as we have some exceedingly good photographers at that level. I believe I have rediscovered my photography after allowing it to lay dormant for many years. I thoroughly enjoy it and I am sure it is the digital revolution that has been instrumental in this awakening. I never cared too much for darkrooms and smelly chemicals, so relied on photolabs. The results were seldom satisfying, but now I can control the whole process, from start to finish and that has made it more interesting for me.
The combination of a friendly club and plenty of encouragement, there and here on the Forum, has dragged me out of the 'happy snapper' rut I had become stuck in for too long. It just goes to show, if I can do it, anyone can!!

I had to vote yes as I've also taken more pics this year (probably on account of buying my first dSLR).
I've got my old portfolios under my sofa from college and keep having a look. I sometimes wonder what it would be like to go back in time with what I know and have now (the F5 was due out then and a 3.2Mp Sony camera they bought cost several thousand pounds - think I would get a few funny looks holding a D1x in 1997!). But then again I wouldn't be who I am now and I'm happy enough.
Also I have had a lapse from this forum for quite a while and coming back here has also had an positive effect on my photography so that says something about yous lot don't it

No. For exactly the same reason. Switching from a sniper's rifle to an assault rifle helps you empty the ammo box faster, but doesn't make you a better shot.

I also went digital this year and feel that it has helped me improve my photography. It's not so much that I shoot more photos in one session, but rather that it has encouraged me to experiment far more with the types of images I capture.
I also joined a photo club in the summer and entering the competitions has definitely helped improve my results.

But presumably practising more does.
It appears to me that that's usually why people shoot more with digital - they do more photography. They try out different things more, experiment with compositions more, etc. That should lead to improved technique, better understanding of things, a more intuitive knowledge of how to get the results they want, and hopefully even a better eye for the picture, more ideas for shots, and so on.

Yes, exactly. Experimenting with film is expensive and by the time it has een returned from the lab, you have forgotten what it was you did to get the image. With digital, it is cheap (free, even) and the exif tells all. You can see on the spot what you have taken and check histograms and composition. What a great boon that is, really.

..a rusty rifle that's not being used isn't as good as one a well oiled one that is used regularly..
Though I do use my film camera as a back-up. Maybe even once or twice a year I might shoot off a roll or two in my MF camera and leave the digi at home..
Besides, a snipers rifle is no good to me as I like to get close up and it would get in the way..

Re: DID YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY IMPROVE OVER 2007?

I seem to be one of many who would put my improvement down to getting a dSLR. I used to use a Canon T90 film camera and would spend hours in the darkroom. I enjoyed it at the time but it was an expensive, time-consuming hobby. Then I got a Canon G3 digital compact but that always seemed to get between me and the photographs I wanted to take. Now I've got a dSLR I'm back to having a camera that just seems to effortlessly do what I want. And, as others have said, the cost of taking pictures is, essentially, zero, apart from the cost of printing those that I consider worthwhile. I'm not taking that many pictures, but my hit rate has never been higher.

No, the bruise on your sighting eye gets to the point where you can't see anything.
I think the same sort of thing happens with digital - if I faff around shooting loads of images, checking things like composition & histogram etc. I rapidly get stale & can't see images any more. OTOH if I treat the thing exactly like a film camera (or rather a set of cameras loaded with different speed film) then I take a lot less images, but see more opportunities and enjoy myself more.
Lots of experience with colour reversal films means I don't have much trouble getting an acceptable exposure, in fact I've found the histogram is a hinderance rather than a help especially in post processing - often I simply do not want an image to contain everything from the blackest black to the whitest white.
Digital technology has clear technical advantages for some types of photography - especially the effective removal of reciprocity failure - and is undoubtedly more convenient, at any rate until it comes to sharing images around (the colour balance issue isn't solved yet). However it doesn't make me a better photographer.
The only thing that might do that is spending more time taking less images.

I agree. The camera as a tool hasn't changed, only the recording medium. I try not to blast off hundreds of shots, but the digital recording means that I can experiment, see the results, and experiment some more. There is a wide range of subjects that I wouldn't have bothered with using film, that I have now tried and accepted into my portfolio.
It would appear that a lot of us have had similar experiences since starting to use digital as well as or instead of film; so perhaps those that still use film exclusively should now admit that the revolution is actually more like evolution and has had a positive effect on the hobby!

So you make a sweeping generalisation stating that everybody goes blind by shooting too much and then back it up with your singular experience and not a broad based view on other experiences. It's not the same for everybody as other posts here testify.

I have not improved much this year due to lack of practice. But I've learned a lot simply by studying this forum so thank you all

Re: DID YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY IMPROVE OVER 2007?

This time last year I didn't have much of a clue really but now I feel that my photography has improved a bit. Mainly due to
1} Being involved in these forums and esp. having images appraised. A couple of bo****kings from BigWill has worked wonders. 2)Reading AP mag
3)and practising loads.I bought a Fuji 6500 last Feb. and I've taken about 5000 shots with it,in as many different situations as possible.
I'm quite chuffed that I am now using a dslr mainly in manual mode.I have no fear of a camera now. Also I find myself shooting in RAW mode mostly and I'm enjoying adjusting images near to how my eye saw the subject.
Thankyou to all the forum members who have given me help, advice and critism.

It's a well known fact that active snipers tend to have one bruised eye - the recoil forces the sight into it. Where snipers have been particularly hated (e.g. Stalingrad) a bruised eye on a prisoner was taken as an indication that the individual was a sniper, marking them out for immediate harsh treatment - execution, if lucky.

The "I" in my post was italicised to indicate it was a personal experience. I don't think I claimed anywhere that my experience was shared by any other individual.

Sure, nobody is under any pressure to agree with me. I was putting a personal point of view - other people presumably likewise.

You still prefaced your statement with a sweeping generalisation.

We both know that you used your sniper comment as an analogy for (supposedly) all DSLR owners who fire away blindly in the hope of getting a good one eventually. It's not true for all.

I'd agree with that, for several reasons.
Using a film camera I would fill a film, wait for the pictures to come back and see the failures, but not be able to take them again.
The outlay for a dSLR isn't small, and for some people it's too much. But I'm glad I've got one because it's more versatile than my first digital camera and I'm able to do the sort of photography I want without worrying about the immediate cost of developing and printing.
Using digital I've been able to practice things I'd never have tried before and yes, I think my photography has improved. There are still the duds, but the overall fail rate (in terms of picture quality) is lower.

YES; but then I think that if, overall, you don't keep improving then maybe it's time to try something else. It really doen't matter whether you use a point& shoot digital compact or take 10x8 transparencies, it's the result that counts. I would bet that every one of us has photographed something different this year that we had never tried before, so, YES, we've all improved.

Not trying to stir things up, bu can I just say that you don't get a bruise from your sights unless your head positioning is wrong, and you're more likely to receive a cut eyebrow than a bruised eye.
Trust me, I'm a shooting coach.

Yes, by a mile. Since becomming interested in photography in 2003 my stuff has been steadily impoving. But 2007 has been something of a step-change year for me :-)
I think a large part of this is because I am now 100% comfortable with my camera - I've had it a while and have "learnt" it.
The ohter significant factor has been enrolling on the SPI Diploma here. It really has helped me to stretch and try new things, and to think about the old things in a different way. Highly recomended.

Re: DID YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY IMPROVE OVER 2007?

I answered yes.
Firstly, I have gained a lot by going out on photographic expeditions with my son, who recived an E500 from Santa last Christmass. By helping someone else I find that I see new things myself.
Secondly, I use film for 90% of my personal photography. Not only do I enjoy using (and processing) film, but I find that I spend more time concentrating on composition. I find medium format especially good in this regard.
My resolution for 2008 is to encourage SWMBO and our daughter to show the same interest as our son, but somehow I suspect I will have given up by Easter.

Or, for the illiterate, a dictaphone.
I can't help thinking that, apart from a microphone (5p) and a few lines of software, digital cameras contain everything required to implement a basic voice recorder which could be used to make notes & automatically be linked to the last photo taken.
In fact some cameras even contain the mic...

I seem to remember the Canon 1D did when it came out. Is this feature no longer available? If so, I've no idea why, a friend of mine found it invaluable at the Commonwealth Games in terms of quick notes about who an athelete was or the event etc.

No. In fact although I've had the camera for a couple of years, I only found the feature a couple of months back...

Ah, but you're supposed to RTFM before you put your mitts on the metal / paws on the plastic (delete as applicable)

"mais vraiment ca n'etait pas trop chiant pour moi."...........................which roughly translated means "God these green tights don't half cut into your knackers"

I have a Kodak 365 (2Mp) camera, which has voice recording for each frame. It was useful, but I don't use the camera any more.

Could weather proofing be an issue for mics on high end cameras? I'm sure you can get suitable mics but are they more hassle to camera designers than they are worth to consumers?

I would have to say Yes and No!
During the 2007 I had learn to use the setting outside the norm "P" on the Nikon D100. It had been an interesting experience, but on the other hand I haven't quite got the time or have enthusiastic to go out and take photographs especially what with all the drab weather the year 2007 produce...
However, I am sure the year 2008 would be more productive (I hope!)...

No reason why the mic can't be outside the weatherproofing, just run the cable through a grommet. Anyway the diaphragm used to pick up sound provides a barrier of sorts.

Re: DID YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY IMPROVE OVER 2007?

I had to say "no", which is a little depressing - but I hope for the right reasons. I'm thinking more about my pictures now and trusting less to pure instinct. Unfortunately, my conscious decision making isn't yet as good as my natural ability - such as it is - and I think actually inhibits it. But hopefully this means that in time my conscious side will improve and either overtake or (better still) merge with and develop my natural talent and I can then start to enjoy the results of my work again.

I've become pretty good at taking pictures of my little one in 2007...
... Funnily, the rest of my photography is not going anywhere!!!
