Another dumb question. A guy repairing a computer for me (he makes his living at it)reported that the PSU in the computer became noisy when connected to the new MoBo. He's not trying to get more money - he says that he'll swap the PSU, foc, with one that he has lying around. Here's the question. How on earth can a new MoBo cause a PSU to alter its sound? MickLL |

Maybe it takes more power and your old set-up was right on the limit of the PSU output? If so the PSU would get hotter an the fan work harder - different sound? |

That makes sense if PSU's are clever enough to alter their speed according to temperature. Are they? MickLL |

Possibly a build of dirt/dust in or on the the PSU coolinig fan? My CPU fan sounded like an aircraft taking off. Stripped it down, cleaned it and it is now quiet as a mouse! Wish I could say the same about the DVD ROM - next project. |

Some PSUs will (and not even when under pressure of use) emit a loud rapid flicking sound - its not the fan working overtime, but the alternator (or some other electical thingy that I have forgotten the name of) working overtime. It might not even happen when the PSU is being used intensivly and might be silent when it is - its one of those strange comptuer things. Best thing is to give it a listen to and see if its too loud for you - I don't think it will ever damage your computer but it can be annoying if it starts happening all the time |

I had to put a bigger psu (500w)in my pc when I installed a new graphics card as it needs its own supply. But you cant beat a good cleanout now and again to help your pc run smoothly. |

If there is a problem with th PSU I would have no hesitation in changing it for a new, preferably upgraded item. The three work machines I have had fail have all been PSUs and one of them took the Motherboard and Hard disk with it. Fortunately it was supplied by a local firm and although several years old they had a rummage around and found a compatible MB and along with a new HDD it was up and running again very quickly (and is still going strong) |
