Looks like March 2008 is going to be a B&W month. The monthly comp is b&w, it's b&w outside at the moment and that's the module I'm on. It's not my favourite thing though. Perhaps I'll appreciate it more when I've finished mod 9. Lisa.

I quite like it, but that doesn't mean I can do it. I guess I'll find out soon!

Hi Lisa, Haven`t checked the forum for a while... things seem to be a little quiet. Isn`t it amazing how we all view the same things differently? I adore monochrome and really look forward to "bad" weather, fog etc. To be honest, I struggle when faced with lots of green hills, green fields, green trees. But when I think B & W then it all makes sense. Best of luck, Chris |

I LIKE PART D! I LIKE PART D! I LIKE PART D! ![]() It's got colour in it! (sort of) I'm having great fun looking at the Pantone range of colours - wonder if Dulux know about them? Lisa.

Quote: part D - you're nearly finished,then . Just think, you'll soon be able to get back to glorious full colour for your own project . Are you planning on including any B&W images in that??? ![]() Carole PS thought I was hot on your heels, as I've nearly finished module 6 over the weekend ....... I should have known better, shouldn't I? . Have you got a target date for finishing the whole course, or are you going to take your time over the last module?

Hi Carole, I redid a pic for Parts A/B at the weekend so I've got to see what it looks like yet. I've probably done 80% of this mod so may get it finished this week or next. I don't know about using b&w in my project but I've got an idea about using one of the colourising thingies. My target for finishing is the end of August and I plan to take my time over "The Project" as want to print them myself and finally get to grips with printing. I bought an Epson R2400 A3 printer a couple of months ago and want to enter the camera club comps next year. I've got about 6 pics from my visit to Northumberland in Feb and I'm going again in June but I have something else I'm thinking of doing, which I was investigating at the weekend. So, I have Plan A and Plan B and will have to see which works out the best. ![]() So, if you get your skates on you may catch me up after all! Lisa.

Quote: very curious are you going to give us a hint?? ![]() Quote: I'm going to try to rally crack through the next few modules over the next month or so (though you might have heard me say that before .... once or twice ). Then I should still have a decent time left for modules 9 (which unlike you, I am looking forward to ) and particularly The Project - I'm going to do Childhood, as that's my main area of interest. Obviously I've got lots of pics that I could use for that, but I want to start from scratch so that I am consolidating everything we've learnt through the course, and also planning out my shoots, rather than just pulling together things that happen to fit the theme. I reckon I'll probably learn as much from the project as the rest of the course put together (and I've learnt loads so far, so that's definitely a compliment) - I'm hoping that it will just help to bring everything together and start sinking it into my photographic subconscious so that I start taking wonderful pictures effortlessly ![]() Carole |

No I'm not going to give you a hint Carole but don't get excited as it's nothing that's even 5% as 'thrilling' as what APChris may be getting up to! It's just something closer to home that I can go back to again and again throughout the next few months. Unfortunately, I haven't got a handy child nearby as sounds like a lovely thing for you to work on. Good Luck and GET A MOVE ON!!! Lisa.

Just been to the post office with mod 9. Goodness knows what Barney's going to make of it. Lisa.

Don't talk to me about going to the post office - what's your queue like? Mine's two deep and out the door eight hours a day! |

There was only 1 person in the post office queue but he took a while as he was discussing how much road tax he had to pay for his digger! The queue for the butties was nearly out the door and that was with 3 people serving - lunch time see. I had a turkey salad, cheese salad and a pork pie and very nice they were too. Thank you Chris. To be honest I still don't think I've got my eye in. The technicalities yes, but not taking the right sort of pictures. The winners of the B&W comp were very good but not the sort of pics I'd normally take. So, I need to start looking at things differently for b&w. Lisa.

Hi Lisa, well done for finishing mod 9, some nice images in your set. I love your Guardian Angel one, it's a lovely shot and the tones really work well - you could probably sell posters of that one in certain areas of the country (well, all over the country, probably ). Have you tried cropping it to lose the empty space on the right? I really like it that way too.And congrats to APChris too - just saw that you got a runners up slot in the B&W competition , and that's before you've even done mod 9 . You must be so pleased about that, a really good achievement .I'm making decent progress at the mo, have nearly finished mod 6 . We're off on holiday tomorrow, so I'm taking the coursebooks, and hope to shoot some pics for mod 8 and maybe even get started thinking/trying out some B&W ones for 9. I plan to get mod 7 done fairly quickly when I get back, so hope to be onto the last few modules fairly soon now . I'm making a detour on my way home from hols, as I am heading up to the lakes to go on an Annabel Williams course about taking pics of children. Unfortunately, it's only 1 day, but I'm really looking forward to that .Carole |

Thanks Carole, yeah I was very surprised and well pleased with that result, very encouraging now that I'm starting mod 9 ![]() I'm off on holiday for a week tomorrow too, but I'm going a bit further than you - Morocco Have fun on the Annabel Williams course ![]() Edit: [Checks time] Blimey!! Hi Carole, I'm glad you like my pic of the Angel of the North. I was trying to decide how to photograph it when the 3 girls walked up, I moved out of their way and then managed to get a shot as they walked off. I agree there's empty space on the right but I like the line of the wing pointing into the corner of the frame. ![]() I hope you have a good time on your holiday - where are you going? And the Annabel Williams course sounds like just the thing to set you up for your project. Please let us know how you get on. Hope you have a good time in Morocco Chris. ![]() Lisa. |

I'm even thinking of trying to get up early and try for sunrise shots (though that depends on what sort of nights we get with the kids - always a bit hit and miss on holiday, but I am optimistically packing the tripod ..... probably the kiss of death for getting any sleep ... )Quote: let's hope so - I'd better follow through on my promises and get through the next few mods quite quickly so that I haven't forgotten it all by the time I get to mod 10 ![]() Quote: likewise, looking forward to seeing those pics! ![]() Carole |

I've been struggling with part C. The problem is I don't possess optical filters for black and white but I do have a whole set of digital 'filters' including Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, Pink and Purple!! ![]() Thought I'd use the RGB ones to simulate optical filters but most of the results I've been getting are dreadfull! The digital 'filter' just adds a dose of colour to each pixel and the result doesn't convert to mono in a way I like. ![]() I'm going to use normal colour images and convert to mono using the appropriate channel. |
||||||||
|
|
|||||||
|
When you say you have 'digital filters' do you mean physical filters that you fit to your lens? In which case if they are fairly strong colours the red, green and yellow will certainly do the job - I've used filters and produced very similar results to using monochrome film with the same filters. Here they are – image captured in RGB and desaturated from filtered original - ![]() To a certain degree tagging the word Digital onto things is a marketing gimmick - when CDs came out, for instance, they started to use the word digital on headphones - there's nothing digital about a filter or headphones in that context. You should be able to look through your filters and see how certain colours seem relatively brighter or darker – reds will seem to leap out seen through the red filter and so on. If that is the case then the colours once recorded in RGB will, when converted to greyscale for instance, seem correspondingly altered (but obviously without the strong cast your camera has recorded.) It’s easier to judge the results once you know what you are looking for - many viewers looing at the examples above have struggled to see the differences but they are huge! On page 30 of this week's AP Angela explains about using filters on a digital camera in more detail. |

I haven't got any B&W filters at all Chris. I just used the basic R, G or B channel coversions for Part C. Lisa.

Lisa, get a big tin of Quality Street - each one contains a plentiful supply of filters - you just need to remove the chocolate from inside - you'll find red ones, yellow ones and green ones. You can send the purple ones to me as they are no use at all - really no use at all. |
||||||||
|
|

Quote: Thanks for your reply Gary. By 'digital filters' I mean it's a setting in the camera's menu that appears to add the chosen filter's colour to the image when it is proccesed, much like adding a stain. They aren't a physical filter of any sort so they wont modify the amount of each colour reaching the sensor as an optical filter does. I think this means that selecting the red digital filter for example, just electronically adds the same amount of red to all the pixels whereas using a red optical filter in front of the lens would let a lot of red light from the scene through making red things in the mono conversion lighter but restrict the amount of blue making a blue sky appear darker. The 'digital' filter doesn't do that! Must rip the plastic off this weeks AP and get reading, I've been looking forward to Angela's article (Haven't finished last week's mag yet though!) |

Yep I can see where I'm going wrong now!! I particulary like the vase and train photos (I would make some comments but flickr is being awkward). Your pics are a lot more 'structured' than mine and work better in b&w. I think you have to have a 'colour head' and a 'b&w head' - I've just got to work on my 'b&w head' some more. Lisa.

Hi Chris, glad you like the photo - your water lillies are very different, what made you think of that subject? Yep still on for Wye and the Forest of Dean. Still 6 of us as far as I know. Did you receive the copies of the YHS booking forms I sent you? and how's the itinery shaping up? Lisa.

Hi Lisa, Yes I received the info. thanks. I am starting to think of a suitable itinery - I am leaning towards gentle ambles with tea/cafe stops rather than up hill hikes! Yep - I really like your shot, well done again. What made me think of the lilies - well I wanted to know how water lilies taken at night against a security light in the heavy rain would look. Heavy rain on Saturday night so thats the result. Not to everyones taste I know, but there is lots to see there if you are prepared to look. Chris |
