Sports photography - legal rights

Hi
I'm off to an athletics meeting next weekend. I've previously been to a football stadium and rugby stadium and told not to use my camera as it's too good/big. Does anyone know what my legal standing is if this situation arrises again? Even better, can anyone point me in the direction of some documentation which clarrifies my options?
